Michael Cassio is a Florentine soldier described as a smooth talking, handsome young man. A man of courtesy and theoretical learning, Cassio is one of Othello's chief lieutenants. For Shakespeare On Tour 2019, Cassio is portrayed by Sam Cheeseman. There is a supposed rivalry between Cassio and Iago, who claims to resent him because Othello chose Cassio as lieutenant, in spite of the fact that Cassio has “never set a squadron in the field” and lacks practical battle knowledge (Act I, Scene 1).
