As another year draws to a close, I’ve been back through the images taken this year to organise and upload them to my stock portfolio and have started updating this website with new imagery. I’ve taken more images this year than I have for the past few years and have really enjoyed exploring new techniques in camera and in the editing suite. At the start of 2023 we made the decision to get back out and into the countryside more and re-connect with friends and have enjoyed may weekends away in the UK throughout the year. We managed trips to all corners of the British Isles putting a lot of mile ..read more

Firework Photography - Bonfire Night in Penistone 2022

I've always found fireworks fascinating particularly when trying to capture them in a photograph as you never really know what you are going to get until the image has finished exposing and is displayed on the camera's screen. I found a new viewpoint to photograph yesterday's display with the aim of capturing the fireworks and bonfire within a wider setting adding a little context and scale into the shots. I really enjoyed experimenting with focal lengths & shutter speed to try and capture the lights of my local town blended with the much brighter bonfire and fireworks. I found an exposur ..read more

Review of the year - 2022 Photography

2022 was another busy year for my photography with a bit of a move away from landscapes into other areas of the photography world. My day job in marketing means I take thousands of photos each month (with the associated editing workload) which at times, allows little energy for my other work outside of work hours. My calendars continue to prove to be a big success, a big thank you to all of my returning customers, it really means a lot when you continue to purchase and support me each year. During this year I moved my website to a new more modern platform which was a large undertaking. The pre ..read more

Scotland Trip Report - Feb 2022

A trip to Scotland in winter is one of my favourite parts of the often dull winter months. I spent last week north of the border in the mountainous Cairngorms national park and rugged valley of Glen Coe. I try to make it up to Scotland each February for my birthday. In the winter months no other location in the UK gives me the same excitement, the pure scale of the landscape with guaranteed snow makes for truly unique photographic opportunities. Aviemore has become our base of choice in the Cairngorms due to the reliable road access in all conditions and resort like amenities. At resort lev ..read more

Autumn in Cornwall - St Ives in November
Nick Cockman - Landscape Photography Blog

The quality of light in Cornwall is matched only by that on the north western coast of the Scottish Highlands. An out of season trip to the Cornish coast is a first for me. St Ives in November was fantastic, quiet streets, empty beaches and shops still open, and it proved to be a fantastic week of relaxation and photography. The sociably late sunrise time allowed me to capture the sun rising above the horizon on most mornings. The harbour and beaches in St Ives offer so many opportunities you could photograph for a month without repeating viewpoints. The classic harbour view from the roadside ..read more

Scarborough

I find a day at the seaside utterly charming. Especially if that day happens to be dry. Scarborough has all the trappings of a good day out. If you arrive via train, you can enjoy the stroll through town, a typical high street with chain shops. But wander either right or left and you can find independent shops, a market hall, art galleries, cafes, bars, and pubs. Descending via eastborough you'll pass a variety of tea shops, pubs and fish and chip restaurants and takeaways. Eventually you will stumble out onto the seafront. The harbour is in front of you to the left and South bay beach to the ..read more

North Devon Photography Trip - September 2020

What a crazy year it has been so far! I had many plans for 2020 but nearly all had to be cancelled when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The content of this website ground to a halt along with most of my photography activities. During lockdown I was still working full time from home so had to put my photography on hold for 6 months. During September, we finally managed to get a holiday week away at the coast. Having previously booked the flat for May, we were lucky to have been able to rearrange for the middle of September. We chose to spend the week in Ilfracombe to give us a central location on t ..read more

There's something about Newquay. Having been multiple times I just love it and there's nothing you can say to make me think otherwise. The last time I was there I stood trying to see it with fresh eyes, as if it was the first time I've ever visited, and I was startled to discover that some of it is a little bit grotty, a little tired. Yet I still love it, it's like the wine you have on holiday whilst enjoying the sunset and believing it really is the best thing you ever tasted. It's everything leading up to that moment that renders it so delicious. The friends you camped with. The BBQs. The ni ..read more

November Overview - Nickscape 365 Project

November is one of my favourite months and I have enjoyed posting all of the 365 images this month. I always try to plan trips for the first 2 weekends of November due to the likelihood of hitting the peak of the autumn colour mixed in with the chance of more dramatic autumn weather conditions. November sees the start of the regular cloud inversions in the mornings and also the more dramatic clouds which leads to the better sunrise/sunset displays. The Peak District and Lake District are my favourite autumn locations and both feature heavily in the November uploads. Below is a summary of all ..read more
