When it comes to picking up a new camera, it is always essential to spend some time dialing in the settings to fit your needs as a photographer. I recently published my complete Setup Guide for the Sony a7R V that takes the time to walk you through the various different menu options and items to help you get started. However, missing from that guide was a complete breakdown of how I fully customize my Sony a7R V. Here, I will walk you through each of the different buttons, dials, and custom menu’s I have set up that fit my needs as a wildlife, landscape, and travel photographer. In addition ..read more

With the launch of the new a7R V, Sony is once again pushing the boundaries of camera technology even further than before. With a dedicated separate processor inside the a7R V that was built specifically to increase AF tracking capabilities through AI learning, subject identification and predicting movement, this camera has a lot of people talking. However, no matter if you are a current Sony user or someone just now joining the Sony family, it can be daunting to pick up a new camera with a new menu system and new technology. That is where this guide comes in! I have combed through the new ..read more

If you have been following this blog and my career as a photographer, you would know that I have generally been a fan of the Dell XPS line of laptops over the last few years. Dell always seems to match polish, power and portability with their XPS laptops in a way that really speaks to me as a photographer and a creative. So when Dell launched their redesigned XPS 13 Plus this year, I knew I wanted to get my hands on one! Now unlike most tech/laptop reviews out there, I prefer to test the devices I use out there in the field, not just here at home in my studio. Luckily for me, I had an upcomi ..read more

Like many of you, I have been an avid user of LCD based laptops over the years. After all, they tend to be popular, affordable, and with the right manufacture, can offer pretty color accurate displays, which is an incredibly important feature for us photographers. But the truth is that LCD displays aren’t perfect and in fact do have a number of tradeoffs that most of us don’t even realize. This became more and more evident to me after a recent adventure to Iceland where I brought the newly released Dell XPS 13 9310 laptop with its gorgeous OLED display panel. It was there that I found myself ..read more

When it comes to being a photographer, one of the most overlooked but vital aspects of working in this field typically comes down to how individuals keep their images safe. It doesn’t matter if you are doing this full time for a living or you just enjoy photography as a personal form of expression, the moments and experiences you capture with your camera are incredibly valuable to each of us. Losing an image, especially a RAW file, let alone an entire shoot or a hard drive full of images can be devastating, both personally and possibly financially as well.
For many of us, having a copy of ou ..read more

Often one of the most overlooked aspects of any photographer’s workflow is their color management system (or lack thereof) that they have in place. Every screen we view or edit our images on should be color accurate, otherwise we don’t really know what the true effects of our post-processing adjustments are really doing to our images. If we end up posting those images to Instagram…or worse, sending poorly edited images to a client, it can be really embarrassing. That, in its core, is what Color Management is all about…maintaining color accuracy throughout all of the devices you use in your w ..read more

One of the best things about owning a Sony mirrorless camera is that virtually every button, feature even the menu system can be customized and tailored to your shooting style, and this includes the newly released Sony a1 flagship mirrorless camera. While I have written a complete setup guide to the a1 for those that are brand new to this camera, I decided to separate out all of the unique customized buttons and menus I did to my A1 here on this blog post so that I had more room to explain and walk you through my choices. As a Sony Artisan that extensively photographs landscape, travel, and ..read more
