When Sharline Andersen’s eldest daughter gave birth seven years ago, she was dying to go visit. At the time, Andersen was working as an executive assistant at HireVue under the company’s founder, Mark Newman, and asked if she could take the week off to help her daughter find her bearings as a new mom. Newman did her one better.  “He said, ‘You know, we should do that. We’ll call it grandternity leave,’” Andersen tells us. HireVue, an HR company based in Utah, has maintained a grandparent leave policy ever since. And a growing number of employers are following their lead, from Fannie Mae ..read more

Cal Newport knows why we’re all so tired at work. In his new book, Slow Productivity, the bestselling author and computer science professor argues that white-collar work is deeply flawed — and has been since the first fax was fired off.  The problem, says Newport, is that we still haven’t come up with a clear way to measure productivity in so-called “knowledge work.” Unlike in the agriculture field where you can point to, say, bushels of wheat yielded per acre of land, or manufacturing — where you can count how many Subarus per worker are built on the assembly line — there’s no simp ..read more

According to the tabloids at the time, when Kate confronted him ..read more

There are a lot of similarities between colorectal cancer and digestive diseases like IBS. For starters, they both share symptoms like abdominal pain and constipation ..read more

Over a decade ago, as a 40th birthday present, my partner Paul took me to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. I had high expectations for this famed, windswept archipelago, which is a British Overseas Territory and is nicknamed “the Galápagos of the Southern Ocean.” Many environmentalists, including Paul, have said that this area is one of the most special places on the planet.  They’re not wrong. During my first visit there, I was blown away by the incredible biodiversity on display in this deceptively barren-looking habitat. Everywhere you look, countless species are co-exist ..read more

“Ikarians enjoy small handheld pies called pitarakia,” writes chef and TV host Diane Kochilas in her cookbook The Ikaria Way: 100 Delicious Plant-Based Recipes Inspired by My Homeland, the Greek Island of Longevity. “[Pitarakias] have a filling of up to 20 different greens and herbs, onions, leeks, and olive oil, all depending on what food’s in season.” Kochilas has taken this idea and reimagined it, using a rice dish that’s “so beloved both in Ikaria and throughout Greece” as her inspiration. Kochilas refers to this dish as “longevity greens rice,” because the deceptively simple fare adheres ..read more
