A Photographer’s Sunset at Shark Fin Cove

With sweat dripping down my face and a heavy camera dangling from a strap around my neck, I raced toward the sunset with a single thought … “I have to get to the beach before the sun kisses the horizon!” Did I make it? Why wasn’t I there with plenty of time to spare? Here’s the story …. Last week, I treated myself to a sunset drive along Highway 1 on California’s Pacific Coast. My destination was Shark Fin Cove in Davenport, CA — which, I had photographed a few months earlier on a foggy day. As I drove along the Pacific Coast Highway, one eye was glued to the road while the other eye was cons ..read more

Last Road in the West Highway 1 in Santa Cruz, CA Photo Specs: 1/500 second exposure  •  f/8.0  •  ISO 125  •  28-300mm lens @ 75mm  •  Nikon D810 If you want to get somewhere fast, don’t drive California’s Pacific Coast Highway at sunset. I made that beautiful mistake a few weeks ago while trying to reach Davenport’s Shark Fin Cove at sunset. Located a mere 10 miles from Santa Cruz, CA, the photo opportunities along the way are enough to make anyone want to stop approximately 84,345 times. Even though I was racing against time, the need to chronic ..read more

There is more to life than work. Last night, I dropped my son off for an appointment and had 45 minutes to sit in the car and get work done on my phone. It had been a very unproductive day thus far and I was way behind. However, as I looked out my car window and saw golden light bathing the nearby buildings, my heart decided on a different plan. Rather than tap tap tapping away at my phone, I took a quick drive to the ocean. Rather than sending emails, I entered my Zen space. For 30 blissful minutes, I traversed the Capitola shoreline … photographing everything I saw. The world melted away ..read more

If you’re planning for a long journey, trains are convenient and relatively cheaper modes to use. Train travel is faster, safer, and more comfortable than bus travel. Compared to air travel, it is eco-friendly and has fewer chances of delays. Moreover, traveling by train allows you to meet new people and enjoy beautiful landscapes.  However, just like any other journey, proper preparation is crucial to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. Lack of proper preparation can cause all sorts of mayhem on your train journey. For instance, you don’t want to pack big, heavy suitcases that will ..read more

Last night, I CELEBRATED ME! 90 days ago, I made a commitment to myself. My wife was doing an intensive three month mastermind for our online biz and she wanted me to join. “No way, Jose,” I said! “I don’t have enough time,” I worried. “This will take me away from all the other things I have to do,” I claimed. However, when I really reflected on those statements, I realized they were all just excuses. So, I said yes. Our first assignment was simple … … set a goal and plan a celebration. Carrie booked a massage. My celebration was going to be an evening of sunset photography at a local beach ..read more

I still remember standing in the station — marveling in all the shapes being formed by the train smoke. My wife and I had just gone for a scenic ride across the Tierra del Fuego region of Patagonia aboard El Tren del Fin del Mundo. Aka, the Train of the End of the World. The Miracle of the Empty Camera Battery

Last weekend, I experienced “The Miracle of the Empty Camera Batteries.” It’s like the “Miracle of Hanukkah” – when the Macabees made a teeny bit of oil burn for 8 nights. Here’s the story … Once upon a time, I brought my dSLR with me everywhere. Charging my 3 batteries was just like getting dressed – I always did it before leaving the house. Nowadays, I rarely use my dSLR. With two young kids, I’m usually carrying their stuff instead of mine. However, when our family went on a camping trip last weekend, I made sure my camera bag was in the trunk My dream was to make photos of the stars and t ..read more
