Moving a program of a nonprofit to become a new standalone nonprofit... does it have "past" activities for Form 1023?

I manage a program which has never had any legal existence, but has operated as a program of other nonprofit organizations. It has actually moved between nonprofits, which was easy since there was no EIN, no business formation, etc. However, this program does have a name, a logo, a website, etc. (No trademark.) The time has come for this program to spin out to become a standalone nonprofit. We're getting a new EIN, forming a new org, etc. Everything new. But Form 1023 asks for info about "past, present, and future activities," and I'm not sure if I should include the activities of the program ..read more

How to file taxes as a nonprofit WITHOUT 501c3 status

Our nonprofit was incorporated last year and we applied for tax exempt (501c3) status at the beginning of this year and still haven’t heard anything back. We need to file our taxes, but have no idea how to do that. I understand that under a 501c3 you would file the 990(for us it would be 990-N postcard), but since we haven’t received the tax exempt status yet, how do we file our taxes? Is it also the 990? Or something else? Thanks for your help in advance!! submitted by /u/LunchValuable692 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Grants

Should I ask for a raise? I’m a regularly staffed, full time employee at a mid-sized local non-profit. We applied for a grant to fund new efforts in our work. I will be part of the implementation of the project and a key staff member required to meet new metrics, reporting, and support. Since my work is not usually grant funded but this grant will create new responsibilities, should I be expecting a raise? submitted by /u/flowerdust3 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How to get paid program staff

Hey all- my org has been in operation for over 3 years now. A lot of great success however everyone (including me; Executive Director) are volunteers. We have about 60 volunteers. Last year we got a grant (our first) for capacity building and we hired part time fundraisers which helped with fundraising. However, we have a real need for at least a full time social worker to supervise our volunteers. Any suggestions on how we get from this place to the next level and having paid program staff? Thank you! submitted by /u/espresso-martini-pls [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Shame on Goodwill SoCal

What is happening with Goodwill? About 6 months ago, on a Thursday evening, left the So Cal Atwater store feeling bullied, humiliated, and ganged up on by employees. It was the worst experience in that it has left me traumatized and still reliving it… Had been a customer of this store for years spending thousands of dollars and mostly for charity. Some of the other managers and employees working there can attest, I pretty sure. That evening, I had been waiting for a cashier to show up to help for about 15-20 minutes, when a new checkout clerk showed up whom I had never seen in that store befo ..read more

I'm starting a new, small business and I want to donate to different nonprofits every 6 months by including a percentage to donate into the cost of my product. Basically I'm wondering if this is even legal or if I need to talk to the nonprofits I have in mind first? submitted by /u/Mry_11 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Voting in a new Board Member

Our current bylaws require a unanimous vote for electing a new board member. Our board is usually 15-19 people. I'm going to propose we change this so one board member can't have that much influence over the make-up of the board. What do your bylaws say? submitted by /u/GlenParkDeb [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
