A Wonderful Accident “Excellent Photography Belongs on Paper,” claims Frames,  an art photography magazine I accidentally discovered last year while researching materials for our NPPE Mentor Curriculum.  I dove into the site’s sample pages, and within a few minutes, I knew I had found a photo/literary treasure. I did not hesitate to subscribe, which has rewarded me with exceptional art photography features, great reviews, and inspirational essays. There are many good art and landscape photography magazines with great images.  However,  National Park Photography Expe ..read more

Landscape photography workshops are often multi-day programs, and the students focus on camera, composition, post-production, and visualization skills. Because of their intense range of instruction, detailed curriculum, and outdoor locations, preparation is critical and the purpose of this post.    After 15 years as a photography and Adobe post-production teacher, with thousands of hours teaching landscape photography workshops in remote locations to hundreds of students, I know the critical value of preparation.   Choose the Right Workshop Before attending a lands ..read more

A Hopeful Horizon

It’s half past night in the west and quarter till nautical sunrise in the east. From my perch on a rugged outcrop along the Grandview Trail, I can see the split light of the deep dark in the west as it slants into the advancing, luminous blue from the east. Stars seem near to me in each segment, and yet each sky has its own intangible but identifiable moments of the rising light. Below me, my night sight picks out a glimmer of star shine on the trail’s slick rock, a mile-plus ledge overview hike in the Canyonlands National Park. When I arrived thirty minutes ago, I claimed a flat dirt squa ..read more

Creating stunning photographs in the Grand Teton National Park seems like a no-brainer. One can pull over at any of the roadside overlooks and snap-shot the snow-capped Teton Range and the silvery sheen of the Snake River in the foreground and come away with fantastic imagery. Throughout the park, iconic locations abound; Mormon Row, Oxbow Bend, Schwabacher Landing, and Cunningham Cabin are just a few of the sites that make the ‘Tetons’ a visual fail-safe for any photographer.   Not a Photo Tour While capturing the stunning landscape is terrific, the National Park Photography Exp ..read more

The seven photographers who came to the Pt. Reyes National Seashore First Horizons workshop arrived with diverse backgrounds, skill sets, and goals. First Horizon classes are about fundamentals, discovery, and new beginnings. Some students came to master their camera’s controls, and others came to learn about composition and visual narration; three had been in previous classes and wanted to renew their sense of visualization. And everyone wanted to dive into creative post-production. As an instructor, I and my assistant, Martha Hernandez, stress fundamentals, such as ‘work the scene,’ ‘work ..read more

Is a Used Camera or Lens the Right Move for You?

I have always been fearful of buying used photography equipment. I’ve had these dreams of being out in the wilderness on a landscape art photography assignment, and just when I needed some piece of gear to work, it would fail. Then there was this nightmare where I have to pack up the gear, ship it back, and hassle for a refund. Without a new equipment warranty, the risk would be all mine, and who needs that. Besides the hazards of financial loss and reimbursement stresses, I did not want to miss the new gear ‘unboxing’ experience. There is nothing more exciting than lifting a new camera or len ..read more
