Sorry for the long delay in posting.  I think the combination of little sunlight, bad/frigid weather, Covid, and new health challenges have wreaked havoc on my creativity and desire to share.  I just feel very uninspired most of the time, so that leaves little room for blogging. We had the blizzard last Saturday, and got around 15 inches, though it is awfully hard to accurately measure when you have drifts over 3 feet and also bare ground.  Eastern Massachusetts seemed to be the jackpot, but most along the northern east coast got plenty.  We only lost power a couple o ..read more

As I write, it is snowing to beat the band and will be for most of the rest of the day.  We're supposed to get 4-8 inches, after which it will be quite windy and VERY cold by mid-week.  It was so lovely to have dry ground on which to walk and drive, but I suppose I shouldn't complain too much; we do live in Maine after all.  At least our road crews do a good job of clearing up the roads during and after storms.  Those poor folks that were stuck on the highway in Virginia for over a day...how awful. I've completed my mittens that originated as a kit that I purchased ju ..read more

Happy Solstice!

As of 10:59 this morning, the sun has started its long, LONG journey back towards the northern hemisphere.  It's ironic that the shortest, darkest day occurs when the weather can still be relatively mild, and that the longer days do not mean warmer days for several months.  It's more of a mental lift that the days are getting longer, since the temperatures are getting lower and the snow will deepen. Weaving has commenced on the towel warp.  This is the ever-popular Strickler #728 draft, which is a bit of a bear to measure out but is easy treadling to weave.  While my ..read more

A Bit of This and That

I didn't wanted to start this post with a photo of my scarf because it is already sold, so I thought I would amuse you with yet another pose from Ivy - she can be such a goof! The scarf was sold within a couple days of posting it on Facebook, but it is the first thing that I've sold through Facebook's "system," and so far I have to say I'm not impressed.  While it is a wonderful way to reach a lot of people, their rules around payment seem a bit backwards to me.  At first, I got a message that said I'd be paid after the scarf shipped.  Then another that said after it wa ..read more

Inching Along

It's been awhile since I've posted, but I find I don't have much to share when I'm not able to weave (or knit, or spin...).  The good news is that all of the splints are off, and I just had my last occupational therapy appointment this week.  There is still healing that needs to occur - complete healing could take up to a year, but my thumb and wrist can try to do anything I decide to attempt. With that in mind, I've taken some handspun merino wool/silk from a few years ago and wound it for a scarf.  The yarn is big enough that I don't need to pinch much, which is a no no ..read more

Fall and Future Plans

I am now 3 weeks and 2 days past my thumb joint replacement surgery, and although I can do much more than I could 2 weeks ago (because I'm now in a removable splint), I'm finding myself antsy and a bit frustrated.  Fall is the perfect time to knit, weave, etc., because the soul-sucking heat and humidity are gone and the holidays are approaching.  I know I can only do what is allowed, which right now are gentle thumb exercises every other hour and some massage of the area, but that doesn't keep me from wanting to do more. I played with my weaving software, and came up with this ..read more

Autumnal Equinox

As the equinox nears (less than 3 hours from now!), I find myself with a rather common reaction - joy and sadness.  I love this time of year, as the air dries out and cools, the bugs lessen (as does the tourist traffic), and sleeping generally improves due to less humidity.  I enjoy being able to wear long pants and a light jacket, to take a long walk and not feel wiped out by the heat, to really revel in the skies which seem a clearer blue. There is sadness as the sun starts its journey south, bringing shorter days and longer nights; watching the blooms, both floral and edible ..read more

Table runners are off the loom, wet-finished and spoken for!  Two still have to be retrieved, but that should happen this week.  Overall, I love how they came out, and the weaving did get easier, but it was a bit of a slog, at least in the beginning.  I ended up with one long cotton runner, one short cotton runner, and one short red wool runner. And an under-exposed photo of both sides; I'm pleased that I got these done, because I am having thumb surgery on Friday (gulp!) and so will not be able to weave (or knit, or spin, or play music) for the foreseeable f ..read more

I'm still plugging away at this last project before the Big Surgery.  I have to say, time is flying by, much to my dismay.  I find myself getting more and more nervous, but then I try to stay focused on what is in front of me, literally, instead of looking so far ahead.  I know surgery is the right decision.  One attempt at playing the violin led to two days of increased pain, so if I want to continue doing the things that challenge me and give me joy, I have to go through this. I'm currently working on the third table mat on this warp.  This time I switched to using w ..read more

Overshot! And Some Changes Going Forward

I'm still plugging away at my overshot project.  The first runner's weaving is complete, though it has repeatedly humbled me.  After the first big error, which I covered in the last post, there have been several more, one of which almost had me giving up.  But I can be stubborn (and practical), so through the many fits and starts I continue to weave. Here a shot of the under-side of my weaving, taken from inside the loom; I had originally planned to weave two long runners to put in my shop, but have decided that one is enough and it may already be spoken for.&n ..read more
