Welcome to my Utility Room – ZWIFITING

I have been Zwifting now for over two years and absolutely love it, especially during the last year with all the various lockdowns we’ve had, it’s helped massively to keep me motivated.  If someone had told me a few years ago that I would spend sometimes hours sitting on a bike in my utility room cycling with people from all over the world and actually enjoying it I would have laughed (the longest distance I have covered in one ride was 240 miles – just over 11 hours I could definitely feel my backside after that!) For those of you who don’t know anything about Zwift let me introduce you ..read more

Chase the Sun 2021

Trying to keep ourselves motivated to train in the winter months isn’t easy in normal times but with events being cancelled for the next few months, motivation to keep training is even tougher.  Like many of us I’m used to a diary booked up with races or adventures, things to look forward to and train for.  Some days getting out of the house to go for a training session is hard and I have to admit that on occasions I really don’t want to do it but I force myself out knowing after a few minutes on my bike I’m in my happy place.  It’s very easy not to sign up for something “just ..read more

2020 – A year like no other

2020 certainly wasn’t the year anyone was expecting!   It began with us looking forward to the year ahead with races, challenges, and adventures we had planned, then COVID-19 came along turning the world upside down and back to front; it was as though we had been transported to a parallel universe.  I never thought I would find myself commenting on how nice someone’s face mask was while food shopping  A week before the UK lockdown on the 23rd March HWMBO caught the virus – anyone who says it’s like the flu is SO wrong.  I watched my husband, who is normally healthy, not o ..read more

The menopause – my story

Talking about the menopause is still a slightly taboo subject, but luckily there are many women out there who are now talking openingly about the struggles they have had or are going through.  Louise Machin highlighted the subject on the BBC which I found incredibly interesting and learnt a lot of stuff I didn’t know.  Having no periods has been incredibly liberating not just with everyday life but while racing as well – having a period during a 120 mile non-stop race in a desert isn’t very pleasant! What is the menopause? (the information below I copied from the NHS website ..read more

Pacific Coast Highway here I come!

Over the past 20 years I have been privileged to have had many adventures around the world. Nowadays it’s on two wheels rather than two feet but the adventures still continue. My next one starts in a few days time when I will be cycling the length of the Pacific Coast Highway starting in Vancouver and finishing 1,848 miles later at the Mexican Border.  Training wise my biggest rides this year have been Hell of the Ashdown, incredibly tough but loved it; 200km (only managed 175) and 300km Audax events; the 200km Castle Ride; cycled around, through and across the Isle of White and recently ..read more

Stepping out of my comfort zone – learning to be comfortable being uncomfortable

It’s hard to believe that a year as passed since I took the first terrifying and tentative steps to learn how to do the front crawl.  Although there’s still massive room for improvement I’m proud of just how far I have come.  On the 5th January 2018 I met up with my swim coach Kevin who said “show me what you can do”.  I explained I could swim but only breaststroke with my head firmly above the water then continued to tell him my fear of having my face in the water and the panic if I can’t get enough air into my lungs. The fear of water stems back to when I was a child living i ..read more

Learning new skills – it’s not all plain sailing!

Over the past few months I have been attempting to master a couple of new skills, at times it’s been tough but I keep plodding on knowing that one day everything will simply fall into place (she says crossing all her fingers) One of those skills is the front crawl.  I don’t think I have ever felt so much out of my comfort zone as I do when swimming.  Many years ago as a child while living in Norway I watched my sister float down a freezing cold river, I thought she was going to die.  Luckily the story ended well but subconsciously the moment has stayed with me, hence being out o ..read more
