The Hope of a Slow Growing Burr Oak
Theology That Matters

When we moved into our home, almost 2 years ago, it became obvious that the previous owners had one love in life: watching NFL football. We gathered this because there were televisions mounted to the walls in the living room, every bedroom, and there were three in the den. They were kind enough to leave us all the wall mounts, which we quickly put on the curb for disposal. I don’t think they ever imagined we wouldn’t follow their lead, and mount 15 televisions throughout the house. We have one. But the real problem with people like that is that they don’t care for the yard, or the house itself ..read more

The Ascension According to John, Part 2
Theology That Matters
by Timothy
1M ago
All of heaven waited patiently for the arrival of the Son of Man. The angels in heaven watched over Him for 33 years after making the announcement of His incarnation. They sang above the manger and tended to Him in the wilderness after His first victory over Satan. They witnessed His death and burial, announced His resurrection, and finally watched and waited with the rest of the host of heaven for His arrival. The Son of Man was returning to the Father. Heaven waited. Before He arrived, John was called up into heaven to witness the arrival. As we saw last week, John saw the Ancient of Days, s ..read more

Pericope!
Theology That Matters
by Timothy

It’s been a while since we’ve had a cat update. Turns out that Pericope is obviously the more photogenic. She is always climbing in or on something. Her sister, Synecdoche, is the more timid cat. In fact, we call her Lard Butt since she is bigger, and rarely tries to jump on anything higher than an Ottoman. She evens struggles jumping up onto our bed. Not Pericope. She finds a way to get onto and into everything. And finally, one of Synecdoche. All photos are copyright © Timothy J. Hammons, 2024 ..read more

The Ascension According to John, Part 1
Theology That Matters

Based on Revelation 4. Now… when it comes to The Revelations of Jesus Christ, which should be the proper name for the book, people have two responses. First, they either ignore it all together, or secondly, they grossly misinterpret it and use it for all kinds of fabricated sensationalism. In the Reformed circles which I have traveled in, most of the pastors I have known are amillennial who tend to ignore the book all together. The other camp that abuses the book are those who are Dispensational. Dispensationalists have taken the book, and its central message, and blown it to smithereens by t ..read more

Parallel Parking
Theology That Matters
by Timothy

Joey is working toward getting his driver’s license, so while he was here, we would go out driving, to give him more lessons and experience. Like everyone who goes through this, the greatest challenge was that of parallel parking. It strikes terror into the hearts of minds of driver’s everywhere. The same was true for Joey. But we did it. I talked him through it. Afterward, he swore off driving for the rest of his life (just kidding). Take a look. He did a pretty good job. (SPECIAL thanks go to the good people of McGregor, TX, who put up with us while trying to parallel park on the Main Street ..read more

Graduation: Timothy Andrew Hammons, Wills Point High School 2024
Theology That Matters

I can’t express how proud I am of my oldest son Andrew and his recent graduation from Wills Point High School. He not only graduated with honors, but also as a member of the National Honor Society. I’m not sure if those always go together. It seemed like there were those graduating with honors who were not members of the National Honor Society. But he was. It has been a real joy to realize how much he has overcome in his 12 years of schooling. When he started in kindergarten, at a classical Christian Academy, I discovered that he was dyslexic, and I was told he would never be able to read, or ..read more

Scotch, Cigars, and Good Fellowship
Theology That Matters
by Timothy

There is just something about a good Scotch, along with a good cigar, and great fellowship. This is one of the things I love about Reformed Christians. We have the freedom to enjoy good drinks along with good cigars. For years, I knew this was true about many in Reformed circles, but it is only in the last two years, since becoming pastor of Waco Reformed Church, that I have found true fellowship with those who enjoy doing just that. I started writing this post because I wanted to share with Gabriel Rench, of CrossPolitic fame, the fact that I picked up another bottle of Talisker Single Malt S ..read more

The Ascension According to Luke

Why did Jesus ascend? Why did He have to go away? Would it not have been better, had He sat up an earthly throne so we could go and visit Him every few years? Isn’t that what we want, a King and Savior we can see, we can speak too, we can actually order a McDonald’s Big Mac with Him? I ask that absurd question because once you start down the line asking questions, … without discernment and restraint, thereby questioning Christ’s wisdom in all things, then you end up in the absurd. Yet, it is right to ask: why did Jesus ascend? We ask with reverence because we do trust in His wisdom in ascendi ..read more

40 Days
Theology That Matters
by Timothy
2M ago
If you were given 40 days to live, what would you do? Would you party like there is no tomorrow, until there really was no tomorrow? Or would you spend the last 40 days of your life doing something more substantial, like being with family and friends. If you did the latter, what would you want your family and friends to know? While Jesus wasn’t die, death could no longer bother Him, He did spend 40 days with His disciples before He ascended to the throne to His Father. The following sermons looks at some of the things He did and said to His disciples. He didn’t party. He instructed. He taught ..read more

In Memory of Birthday Girl
Theology That Matters
by Timothy
2M ago
It’s hard for me to remember a time when Birthday Girl wasn’t the resident queen of the pasture at the family ranch. I know there was a time when Custer was the king, but he was never as gentle, and loving as Birthday Girl. My sister informed us of her passing today. She was almost 32 years old. Most of the following pictures were taken back in 2013. We will all miss her. All photos are copyright © Timothy J. Hammons 2024.  ..read more
