There is a big push towards STEM education in schools now. Literally, it stands for science, technology, engineering, maths and looks to encourage little (and not so little) minds to gain an awareness and hands on training in these areas in an effort to encourage the take up of tertiary study in these subjects. Down the track for our kids, this means they could end up generating and contributing to scientific developments and innovations for the future.
And aside from all that, the hands on learning part of STEM can be really fun! Each week my daughter’s grade 4 teache ..read more

Having a strategy for your fundraising is extremely important if you want to increase engagement, volunteers and profit. It is one of the ‘5 secrets to fundraising success’ that I list in my book: The Practical Fundraising Handbook for school and Club Volunteers.
Not only do many organisations not have one, those that attempt to put one together seem to struggle with the process.

Black tie fundraising balls, galas, dinners. Whichever version you choose will typically require months of planning and preparation from your committee but on the plus side, will often repay your hard work with great rewards. But what if I told you that you could organize a black tie fundraiser with VERY little effort and still raise money for your cause …

What did you have as an incentive for volunteers ? If it was a volunteer raffle, what prize/s did you have ?
We gave volunteers a fast pass to give to their child for a once only go to the front of a ride queue. And gave it publicity leading up to the fair so kids would get their parents to volunteer
A massage voucher.. one ticket per hour
We had a huge raffle with lots of prizes, including an iPad. We sold tickets for $2 each.
We gave each volunteer 10 free tickets in the raffle.
And then, as it turned out, all but 2 prizes were won by volunteers- the iPad was won by the dad who built ..read more

There’s no better way of creating a great atmosphere at your school or club than holding a community event that everyone is invited to. But not every school or club has the resources or the funds to put together a large-scale event like a fete, so what are your other options?
Family events are your answer. These are events that all family members can attend or participate in. They can be used purely as a community spirit building event, but you can also turn them into a fundraiser as well.
Having just started a new school year, you will undoubtedly have new families joining your ..read more

When you break it down, there are few fundraisers and events where families get to spend time together, being active together but without having to spend money. This is why a family challenge night makes a wonderful departure from the norm, regardless whether you set the challenge night up as a free or cost-recovery community event or as a fundraiser with entry tickets.
What is a Family Challenge Night?
A family challenge night is an event where families (parents and kids) participate in a series of events against other families. This makes it suitable for schools, sports clubs and even daycar ..read more

Unfortunately, working with large sums of cash comes with a number of risks. Even smaller scale fundraising events such as door-to-door sales and cake stalls have inherent risks when it is known that there is cash around. This article looks at some of the precautionary measures you can take with cash handling, as well as options for cashless fetes.
Where are the risks of cash handling?
At any stage where money is being handled there is going to be a risk. Whether this risk is small or large will depend on a number of factors, such as whether the people involved are known to you or not, the qua ..read more
