Reality check for first tri (Olympic)

I had a somewhat disappointing preparation for my first triathlon which is in one week. As I'm tapering, I would love to get a reality check. My goal is to finish with a smile. The swim is in fresh open water. Bike/run is flat. My individual best times with comfortable high Z2 efforts are: Swim in 45' (cutoff 50') Bike 1:30 (cutoff 1:45) Run 75'. (no cutoff, only total cutoff 3:45) (summing them up: 3:30) All together these are barely under the total cutoff time of 3:45. I don't have time to spare in transitions. If I swim/bike/run closer to threshold I could obviously do better, but ..read more

Staying disciplined through nagging injuries

I am three months out of my first 70.3, and am starting to notice nagging pains because of the increase in activity. A tendon here, a joint there. I try to be smart and rest to prevent the injuries from getting worse, but also want to stick to my schedule. I'm increasing less than 10% total volume per week, taking a light reload week every fourth week. I was hoping this would be plenty slow enough to prevent injury but I guess not. What do you recommend? Keep the volume low as long as the pain is there, or still try and get the maximum milage in as long as the pain is manageable? submitted b ..read more

Early symptoms of achilles tendinitis - what do I do?

So, I am currently training for my first sprint triathlon at the end of June. I completed the Couch to 5K NHS app a few days ago, and afterwards what had felt like the occasional mild twinge became actual mild pain in my achilles tendon. That was about three days ago. I've stopped doing any exercise since then and been periodically icing it and doing deep calf stretches, but it seems to be getting worse rather than better. It now hurts first thing in the morning (still mild but worse than it was), and hurts after like 10 or 15 minutes of walking. Apart from doing the school run, I've been res ..read more

Additional training sessions in build phase or not?

Hi, This week I started with a 12 w training plan for a 70.3 First 3 weeks of the plan is build phase with 11h43m, 12h47m, 13h42m hours of training per week. Can it any wrong to add additional sessions during these weeks? And if it does no wrong, should I respect the increasing total time per week for week 1-2-3? As tomorrow is a day off, I would like to join a +/-4h group ride (mainly z2 with some smaller hills where I would do z4 sessions). Thanks. submitted by /u/Dark_inferno_24_7 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Asthma treatments and speed

I went to the asthma & allergy doctor yesterday and have been given some medication to help me manage my breathing. I asked the doctor if the treatment would make me run faster, and she seemed to think so. Are there any asthmatic triathletes here who have seen a difference in performance after getting treatment? I’ve always been an albuterol inhaler as needed type of asthmatic, not a daily steroidal type, so I’m curious, did you finally get to the point where your legs get tired before your lungs? I can’t imagine that, not running, at least. submitted by /u/laluneestjolie [visit reddit ..read more

Bike sizing tips

Hey folks I found a great deal on a BMC timemachine size L (stack 556 reach 442), but I'm not sure if it would fit me I am 6'1" (184cm) with 33.5" inseam Based on BMC's site, it would be for riders from 186cm to 196cm, so I am roughly 1" shorter than the minimum for the bike... What are your opinions? Although I am a mediocre amateur triathlete, I am quite competitive and wouldn't mind to sacrifice a bit of comfort to get faster. Would be my first t100 race, I live close to the venu so I would not need hotel, bike service or airport travel and it looks like the only registration available includes all of these things. Am I missing something? https://t100triathlon.com/lake-las-vegas/participate/ submitted by /u/Tryhard155 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Olympic tri - wetsuit for beginner

I'm 8 weeks out from my first olympic distance tri (2nd triathlon) and planning out what I need. Last time I did a sprint triathlon in summer in australia and no wetsuit needed however my next race is in Sweden in July and water temp predicted around 20c depending on how much sun we get. I am having a bit of issue finding a wetsuit in my size - 195cm 109kg, mostly sold out. Big branded suits are double or triple my budget. Alternatively I saw a 3mm open water/ SUP wetsuit (full length). Says its great for swimming but unsure what to do. Not much availablein sweden and looking abroad. A tri su ..read more

It's so easy to screw it up early in the day when the excitement is high, ask me how I know.... Cramps, bonking, stomach feeling like a mess, abject feeling of impending doom from drowning. 10 out 10 already signed up for my next race, hopefully I learned enough to do it better. submitted by /u/Aflyingoat [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
