As we come to the end of September Ironman Cairns was our third full-distance Ironman event of the season. The Asia-Pacific Championship comes with 75 slots for the 2021 Ironman World Champs, but Covid means numbers were exceptionally low. 221 age group athletes (241 including pros) made the start line and competed for those places. Unsurprisingly, there’s a significant shift in qualification times for this year’s event. With low numbers of competitors this year’s distributions lack the smoothness of the amalgamated results. They broadly reflect a similar pattern though. The swim is distinctl ..read more

Ironman Tallinn 2020: Age Group Results and Kona Qualification

Ironman racing has returned. After months of postponements and cancellations the second full distance Ironman brand race took place over the weekend in Estonia. Ironman Tallinn 2020 was – not surprisingly – a small race. There are enough restrictions and difficulties with travel in place and Tallinn wasn’t the largest event to begin with. Results trend faster as a consequence, likely seeing the more committed athletes racing. You can explore the results of Ironman Tallinn in more detail in the results section. Both bike and run times trend much faster this year. There are likely two causes fo ..read more

Updating the Ironman Statistics: Now with Added Ironman Results

In October 2012 I decided to make a copy of the Ironman World Championship results and take a closer look. About a month later I’d fetched results for every Ironman that year and started to look for patterns. By early 2013 I’d outgrown the spreadsheets and made the move to a dedicated database. I started to preview and analyse the results of Ironman races throughout the season. Since then things have grown: my database holds over 1,000 races, 800,000 athletes and over 2.2 million rows of results. While the system has adapted and expanded behind the scenes, front-facing content hasn’t changed t ..read more

How combining 2020 and 2021 Kona Slots Might Affect Qualification

Ironman has announced that they will extend the 2020 qualification season by an extra week to add in 3 additional races: Ironman Canada, Ironman Kazakhstan and Ironman Vichy. These races will remain 2021 qualifiers, but also become 2020 qualifiers with 60 2020 Kona slots on offer at each. We’ve not previously seen double Kona qualifiers so I thought I’d have a look at how this impacts on potential qualification times at these races. As details are sparse I’ll have to make some assumptions. Firstly, that you won’t be able to claim a both slots. This seems likely as races that carry both Kona an ..read more

The 2020 Ironman World Championship and Covid-19

There are bigger issues to worry about right now, but for some – particularly those already qualified – there is the question of what will be happening with the Ironman World Championship in 2020. Covid-19 has already impacted on many race plans and season goals. Let’s be honest, if missing a race or not being able to train as you’re used to is all this virus does to you you’re very lucky. With that in mind and knowing there’s no official information yet, I thought I’d look at the numbers for Kona so far this season. Race dates and numbers correct on 24 March 2020. Ironman New Zealand 2020: Age Group Results and Kona Qualification

Ironman New Zealand opened the 2020 Ironman season over the weekend. New Zealand is a medium sized race with a long history in Ironman. It offers the standard 40 age group Kona slots for the 2020 Ironman World Championship. there were some alterations to the course for this year’s race, but they don’t appear to have had any significant impact on the results. Note that I’ve excluded the 2012 race from this analysis as it was shortened due to race day conditions. Comparing this year’s results distribution with previous years shows a race that doesn’t vary too much from the averages. The swim is ..read more

Ironman Argentina 2019: Age Group Results and Kona Qualification

The final Ironman race of 2019 was Ironman Argentina, the South American Ironman Championship. It’s a relatively new race that draws a small field of age group competitors, but as a regional championship it comes with 75 Kona slots. That works out as Ironman World Championship qualification for roughly 12% of the field. Times from the course are relatively fast, at least at the qualifying end of the race. The 2018 swim was short so those splits and overall times from 2018 are removed from the amalgamated results Comparing the distributions we see a much faster swim at this year’s race in comp ..read more

Ironman Western Australia 2019: Age Group Results and Kona Qualification

The final weekend of racing of the 2019 Ironman season started with Ironman Western Australia. This mid-sized race came with 65 age group Kona slots for the 2020 Ironman World Championship season. That lifts qualification prospects for a number of big age groups. The Busselton course is flat and generally quite fast. The 2017 results have been excluded from this analysis due to cancellation of the swim. Comparing the split distributions of this year’s race with the amalgamated results of the previous decade shows a race that was slower at its median. At every stage the 2019 event was slower a ..read more

Ironman Cozumel 2019: Age Group Results and Kona Qualification

Ironman Cozumel is the second race to review from the last weekend. It’s a mid-sized event with the standard 40 age group Kona slots on offer. In performance terms Cozumel tends to be mid-range, but times have varied a lot over the years and it’s not the most consistent course. This year falls inline with historic data although individual splits vary more. Overall the finishing distribution for the 2019 race is very similar to the amalgamated results of the previous ten years. This covers a slower run distribution and faster bike distribution at this year’s event though. Swim times in Cozumel ..read more

Ironman Arizona 2019: Age Group Results and Kona Qualification

Ironman Arizona took place over the weekend. It’s a large US race with a long race history that typically draw around 2,300 competitors for a standard 40 age group Kona slots. Despite major changes to the Ironman website I’ve been able to extract the full set of results from the new platform for analysis. This years race is slower at the median, but remains quite consistent at the front of the age group field. Comparing the race distributions over the last decade shows this year’s race to be a little slower in swim, bike and run. Cumulatively this makes the overall median finish time slower t ..read more
