Swiss roll fans anyone? Me for one, loves me some of that unconventional "cake" which literally had the creator think out of the box and roll with it. That's why I was immediately interested when Polar Puffs and Cakes asked if they can send me their latest Fruity Fluffy Rolls in 3 exotic flavours based off their signature sugar rolls. The flavours are (from left to right below): Lychee Rose, Golden Mango and Tropical Pink Guava. I thought for sure my favourite would be lychee rose as well, but I was pleasantly surprised by the other 2.  Available in all Polar outlets as a roll (S$8 ..read more

Cafe Review: S17 Cafe at 57 Lengkok Bahru, #01-477 Singapore 151057

If you are in the Redhill or Bukit Merah vicinity, check out this relatively new social enterprise all-day breakfast cafe called S17 Cafe Peonies at Lengkok Bahru! It soft launched last year and is a cafe by day and private dining space by night. I love that there's another social enterprise opening just a few doors away from the S17 Community Kitchen, which is an open-air coffeeshop that sells really delicious nasi padang in the day and Peranakan food in the evenings.  Walking in, you'll see immediately that the air-conditioned cafe has excellent sound proofing with the carpe ..read more

Italian Food Review: Ristorante Da Valentino at 200 Turf Club Rd, #01 - 19, Singapore 287994

I went to Valentino's for my birthday as well this year together with my brother and his GF. It was a great place for communal celebrations, or in my case, a long boozy lunch. The place is super old school, or classic if you would, and typical of a European restaurant. I love that about the place, because it feels like one's being transported to another dimension.  There's also a big wine cellar adjacent if you are in the mood to procure some really good Italian wines. We started the lunch with some appetisers which tasted fresh and of course whetted our appetites for the main cour ..read more

Cocktail Bar Review: Stay Gold Flamingo at 69 Amoy St, Singapore 069888

A relatively new cocktail bar (to me), Stay Gold Flamingo occupies a shophouse at the end of Amoy Street which doubles as a cafe in the day and a cocktail bar at night. The front of house is a small bright space, and entering the cocktail bar, you'll be transported to a night sky of shimmering stars and semi-darkness elsewhere. I went with a friend to finally check out their drinks during Happy Hour. Here's their golden hour menu where cocktails are at $16 each.  We also ordered two bites. The Tofu Express (S$10) sounded interesting with the coconut cream and chilli concoction bu ..read more

Korean Seafood Review: Pohang Seafood & Butchery at Jln Jurong Kechil #01-52, Singapore 596152

This place is so out of the way you almost need a passport to get to, but it offers such exotic food, you feel like you have to anyway! Pohang Seafood & Butchery is a restaurant with authentic Korean seafood and sashimi, which is quite rare in Singapore since the bulk of the restaurants offer BBQ or cooked food. There are 3 branches and we went to the Jurong one. The restaurant itself is VERY barebones and sound actually echoes around quite a lot so.. don't speak any secrets you don't want overheard! We decided to be adventurous and get the Sashimi Set (Sliced Raw Flat Fish and Salmon Set ..read more

Italian Food Review: Osteria BBR by Alain Ducasse at Raffles Hotel, 1 Beach Rd, Singapore 189673

I went to an Italian restaurant called Osteria BBR for my birthday this year which sounded quite interesting due to the Alain Ducasse name. The entire restaurant was gigantic, located inside Raffles hotel. The experience was overall positive, though I am not entirely convinced with the food as it was overshadowed by the nice place, wine and huge price tag. It's the kind of place for people who do not look at the prices of items before ordering.  The free bread was delicious. The octopus with potato foam came in this size and I believe it's S$38. Ouch! Yes it was nice and tender and d ..read more

Food Review: Dickson Nasi Lemak at 320 Joo Chiat Rd, Singapore 427571

I tried the famous Dickson Nasi Lemak in May 2022 and found it to be quite a decent relative to the Village Park Nasi Lemak in KL, which I have had before as well. We had to wait 20 minutes for our order to be ready (so we hopped across the street for some Petit Pain rolls), but it wasn't that bad a wait. The only thing is its located at Joo Chiat, which for me is quite a distance. The shop's really just a space for the team to serve up the boxed nasi lemak, which at $9.20 excluding GST, is quite a hefty price. It's worth it though I think, occasionally. Here's the utilitarian but clean and b ..read more

Canggu Bali Itinerary: Where to eat, drink and watch sunsets in 2022

If you're looking for the best area to go in Bali this year or next, it has to be Canggu or Pererenan. After spending one month working from Bali this October, specifically in those 2 adjacent areas that is just 15-30 minutes north of Seminyak (and some way away from Ubud), I've chalked up a decent amount of restaurants, cafes and co-working spaces to recommend you in this post.  As you can see in the map below (and no, the spots pinned in the map are not the exhaustive list of where to eat, drink and watch sunsets in Canggu or Pererenan), the area outlined in red is Canggu and it bas ..read more

Italian Restaurant Review: In Piazza at 28 Stevens Rd, #01-04/05, Singapore 257878

In Piazza is an Italian restaurant on Stevens Road that was recommended to me by a dear friend who went, "you should go because its so underrated (i.e. food's good but not crowded)!" And of course I trust my friend and found her statement to be entirely true! The place was a little out of the way (I took a private hire car and still got lost trying to find it in the compound) but took a bus back from RGS after orienting myself. Good news for folks with doggos - their alfresco area is dog-friendly which means you can enjoy a meal with your best friend there! Here's their menu from their websi ..read more
