Your strategy, or the one you will soon develop, is flush with your organization’s competitive advantages. It creates excitement and inspires your leadership team with the strategic transformation that is seemingly within reach. However, in the back of your mind is maintaining ongoing operations. It is the organizational tug-of-war of the ages, and while you’re inspired, sleepless nights remain as to how your team will succeed in strategy and ongoing operations.

First, CONGRATULATIONS on your new role! There’s no doubt you get things done. Now it’s time to put your stamp on your new organization. It’s time to state YOUR STRATEGY.
If you operate like most DoD agencies, you’ll want to tie directly to the National Defense Strategy and your area within the DoD. Using Air Force as an example, it may look like this:
NDS -> CSAF -> Your Area of AF
Next, you’ll state your organization’s Mission and Vision, with strategies you’ll look to implement over the next 12 – 24 months. More than likely, you’ll next break down the work of strategy into strategic a ..read more

In this super special edition of the Caged Vision Podcast, I interview Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Shawn Campbell. We discuss his nearly 3 decades of leadership in the US Air Force and newly minted US Space Force.
Brig Gen Campbell dives into how doing things differently as a leader is many times what is required to reverse failure and achieve success.

Frustrated with Strategy
As I often do, I like to lead with a point of frustration expressed in a recent conversation with a leader, “We’re measuring a lot of things, and we’re getting things done. I’m just not sure what we’re doing is having the impact we need.” I guess the only thing more frustrating than doing nothing is not knowing if what you’re doing is achieving the outcomes and effects you need. Success will always be fleeting if you can’t measure your strategy performance.
“It’s all about amassing resources on as few things as possible… that’s when you get momentum.” ~Frank Slootman ..read more

A Strategy Operating System
“If we had a system, we could focus more on the problem than band-aiding what we’ve built…..” These are the words of a leader within the United States Air Force (USAF) on the topic of strategy implementation. He went on to say, “If people know you’re committed to a process to achieve an outcome, they’re more willing to go along with it…and you get more collaboration, cooperation, and inclusion.”
While this may sound obvious to many, the USAF is not alone in experiencing strategy implementation challenges. The good news is that your leaders are likely giving you sign ..read more

Most Strategies Fail
If you’ve stopped to read this, there’s good news – you’re not alone. While that may not make you feel any better right now, there’s plenty to be encouraged about.
For decades, leaders have created strategies and have failed to give their teams the right tools to execute successfully. With this leadership oversight, siloes have been created, monitoring has been challenging, and failure to execute has become common.
“Even the best strategic plans can fall flat without the right execution. In fact, 90 percent of businesses fail to reach their strategic goals, which research ..read more

“There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.” This is from the plaque that sat on Ronald Reagan’s desk during his presidency. Could it be that President Reagan was actually a member of a Secret Society?
Well, whether he knew it or not, President Reagan certainly had the mindset of what Tim Schurrer calls The Secret Society of Success.
On today’s Caged Vision Podcast I interview author Tim Schurrer on his new book The Secret Society of Success. Be sure to download and listen to here great stories like:

I interview many government leaders about how they communicate strategic priorities and empower employees to engage in strategy. However, with large organizations like the Department of Defense (DoD), empowering teams to think strategically is challenging. Even great leaders struggle to figure out how to get their teams to think more strategically.
COMPLEXITY IS THE ENEMY OF STRATEGY
As organizations grow, the multitudes of leadership levels increase. When leaders succeed, they get promoted. If they fail, they go to purgatory. As a result, some leaders attempt to control every decision. Before ..read more
