My #1 rule for eating Valentine candy

Picture this perfect storm: ?   I have PMS and I’m craving sugar like crazy, and then my husband hands me a huge box of my favorite chocolates and 2 pounds of fudge. ?   I don’t have to spell it out for you – I’ve been eating a LOT of chocolate. ?   I was thinking about documenting the adventure in a series of posts from the chocolate wilderness, like, “Day 3: Face breaking out, lethargy has set in, stomach killing me. No end in sight. Will consider vegetables tomorrow.”   Really, I’m ok with it. I don’t have rules around food, and I know I’m gonna go a little wild around V ..read more

Four and a half years ago, one of my daughter’s friends from school came to live with us when he was having family problems, and we eventually got legal custody of him.   Based on all my life experiences to that point – my long history of rescuing animals, and then adopting my two amazing daughters – I was really clear about what should happen with this kid.   We do the right thing, be honest, reliable, responsive, and caring, and he will be happy and grateful and healthy. It was so clear to me: A + B = C.   I probably don’t need to tell you that it didn’t work out quite so perf ..read more

I know how you can lose 7 pounds in 6 days!   Be honest...how excited did you get after reading that headline? I really could tell you exactly what to do so you could lose that much weight in that short amount of time!  I’m an expert in weight loss.  I’ve lost weight many, many times. I know all the philosophies, all the rules, all the hacks and tricks and “secrets.”  I’ve woken up on MANY Monday mornings and thought, “This is it. I’m gonna DO IT!” and then made a Virgo-y list of exactly how...   ▶️ What I was going to eat (usually hardly anything -- except for that ..read more

Have you ever seen those huge jars of M&Ms they have at Costco?  It’s just one giant container filled with M&Ms -- 62 ounces, to be exact -- like, not individually wrapped or anything. So you have to imagine that whoever buys it will just be diving in with their germ-encrusted fingers, groping around for a handful of candies. Which means, at least in my mind, that they’re meant for private consumption. I’m sure the good people at M&M headquarters have a target audience in mind when they package their goods. I mean, you’re not going to set a big jar like that on a store counter ..read more

I bought one of those fancy Purple mattresses recently. I really love it -- it’s squishy and bouncy and cradles you like a big, supportive, non-judgmental friend. I figured I’d love the pillow, too, so I used my precious birthday Amazon gift cards to buy myself a Purple pillow shortly after the mattress arrived. When the box was delivered, it weighed about 30 pounds, so I optimistically imagined that the fine people at Purple had sent me a large, expensive, heavy thank you gift for purchasing their mattress. Alas, it was the pillow. The very heavy pillow. I unpacked it, and with Bill’s h ..read more

How do you stay flexible around food when you can't eat certain things?

I chose to stop eating wheat because it was making me sick. Is that ok? ?   Intuitive eating is a LOT about freedom with food and ditching diet culture, but it’s also about respecting your body and eating in a way that works for YOU. Navigating those waters is not always easy -- since starting this, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought, “Well, I could stop eating sugar and dairy, too,” or “I wonder if I’ll lose weight doing this.” There’s nothing inherently wrong with those thoughts, but for me, they represent a slippery slope back into diet thoughts and disordered behavior around ..read more

“I don’t want to be this fat.”

“I don’t want to be this fat.” I hear you, and frankly, I don’t either. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror yesterday wearing a shirt that doesn’t fit me well, and I was genuinely disgusted with the way I looked. Listen, I know I’m that last person who should be admitting stuff like that. But honestly, we live in a culture that tells us we’re gross in millions of different ways, and there are very real drawbacks to living in a larger body -- small chairs, limited clothing choices, blatant shaming and discrimination. It’s NORMAL to feel disappointed in our bodies. I know your first insti ..read more

I know this is going to be controversial, so I’m just going to come out and say it: I hate raspberries.  I’ve gotten more flack about this than just about anything else in my life. WHY don’t you like them, Teddey? They’re SO GOOD. How can you not LOVE them? Listen -- I don’t know how to explain it. They’re hairy, seedy, and taste bad to me. I’m SORRY, ok?! It is what it is. (The only exception to my no-raspberry rule is that little ramekin of raspberry jam they used to serve with the monte cristo sandwich at Bennigan’s -- anyone remember that? God, I used to love that.) Anyway, raspberrie ..read more

We took the scenic route to my first year of college. I went to a tiny, hippie school outside of Asheville, NC -- I think there were 500 students that year (1995).  I had to be there early on a Monday morning to check in, so my mom, sister, and I drove down on Sunday. Because of scheduling issues, we had to take 3 separate cars -- I was keeping my car there, my mom was staying all week to help me settle in, and my sister had to come back to Maryland for work after just a couple of nights. We were an adventuresome trio, so we decided to take the back roads and spend as much time as possibl ..read more

How to stop feeling desperate and allow yourself to be happy

I made a huge mistake when I heard we were getting another stimulus check this spring. I started spending the money before I had it. I went on the IRS website and figured out how much I would get, and then I sat down and planned out what I was going to do with it. It was exciting to think I could pay my big tax bill and still have some money left over for something fun -- like a friend’s destination wedding in December. I got a little loosey-goosey with the money I had set aside for the tax payment, because I knew that stimulus check was coming. I RSVP’ed “YES!” to the wedding, because I knew ..read more
