Your Golden Hour? That’s the hour you gift yourself each day, to use in a way that will lead you more consciously towards the life you really want. It is an hour that is just for you. To sit and think or write or draw or exercise or stretch or garden or call your favourite person or design your future or listen to podcasts or read articles. It’s the hour you guard preciously and refuse to handover with all the other hours that you give to others. And it’s a daily thing. A promise that you keep to yourself. It might happen at 5am or it could be at 11pm. But ideally, it features when you are at ..read more

Shiny Hair

Do you think my hair looks shiny?! I remember A Hundred Years ago, someone I like very much told me that when she’s feeling flat, she says this to her partner so that they’ll say: yes! It is! And then she feels great. At the time, it made me laugh. But now I think about how helpful it is as a strategy to use…with yourself. When you find yourself yourself feeling flat you can simply ask yourself: do you think my hair is shiny?/I’m kind?/I made a great risotto?/I delivered a strong performance?/I wrote an awesome submission? And then you simply answer yourself: yes! Yes it is! Yes you are! Yes y ..read more

As an evidence-based life and career coach, people speak to me all the time about confidence and about how to boost it. There are a whole lot of strategies – practical stuff you can do and internal shifts you can make, to encourage greater confidence. This is one idea. Situations Have a think about the situations in which your confidence tends to take a dip. It could be: When you’re presenting to an audience When you’re with new people and you think they won’t like you When you’re doing hard stuff and you start to think you aren’t good enough Strategies Then determine some practical things t ..read more

Pay attention, on purpose

So many people come to see me and say: I know I should meditate and it’s so bad but I just can’t and I know that’s terrible! [Or something along those lines]. Meditative practice has so many widely documented benefits. And if you’re practicing regularly, then that is terrific. But thinking you should and then feeling bad about it about it is never going to deliver anything great. Mindfulness can be understood as: paying attention, on purpose and without judgement, to the moment, as it unfolds. Instead of beating yourself up about your failure to meditate, why not start with small moments of an ..read more

I am an evidence-based life and career coach and I often speak to people who are curious about coaching, who are keen to see if coaching can help them. They tend to ask: what kinds of stuff do you coach people about? Here’s my answer! Coaching is a goal-oriented and solution-focused conversation that is designed to help you work out who you are, what you want and where you want to go. If there is anything in your life or career that you would like to change, anything that is within your control, that you can set a goal around and actively work towards…then I can coach you on it. Different coac ..read more

Feeling super bored and unmotivated at work? Why not try this! Challenge yourself to find a single thing you can do this week, to boost: + Your sense of autonomy Maybe you could speak to your manager about ways in which you could gain greater control over your day. Maybe there are meetings you can opt out of, maybe you could have more flexibility over your hours… + Your sense of competence Perhaps you could sign up for a professional development unit or do some training on LinkedIn learning. You could speak to a more experienced colleague, explore Coursera or enrol in a Masters program. + Your ..read more

As an evidence-based life and career coach, I am always listening out for clients’ resources –  the stuff they can leverage to help get them where they want to go. One of the biggest [and often most under-used] resources is…people! Whatever you’re aiming for – a new role, more friends, greater confidence, finance for a home, an idea for a business, a relationship, being able to ride a bike – have a serious think about who you know and how they might be able to help. Then ask them. But… I don’t know anyone. FALSE! I absolutely dispute this. Everyone knows people. It’s just that you think y ..read more

Feeling overwhelmed?

If you are feeling overwhelmed, try this. [*Friends, please note that I’m just talking general life overwhelm here, not anything like anxiety or panic. If that’s what you’re feeling, please draw on your tried-and-tested strategies and if you need to, contact someone who will be able to help you.] Find yourself a quiet room and sit in it, for 30 minutes. Leave your phone outside, on a timer. Don’t have anything within reach except a piece of paper and a pen [but try not to use these for the 30 minutes]. Then begin. Get comfy, take a deep breath. Just sit. When the timer goes off, take a few not ..read more

Freaking out about your lack of purpose and direction? As an evidence-based life and career coach, people often tell me that they’re scared that they don’t know what to do with their life, that they’re worried that they lack any ideas for a fulfilling career, that they have no driving purpose. It’s interesting then, to read about people who have found themselves a meaningful professional direction, who do feel satisfied. They often report a sense of having always been on their way, of having allowed life to unfold, of having a deep sense of faith that their experiences, skills and chance have ..read more
