What could cause this type of corrosion?

Images are here: https://imgur.com/a/FrIty69 There is huge corrosion on that end of the cable and also a bubbly kind of greenish liquid in the other cable end? Any ideas? The system is under 2 yrs old. I live on the coast in England but this cable was inside a flat roof cavity so pretty protected from the elements. I am going to remove the soffit boards and have a look in the cavity but have not done this yet. submitted by /u/oneilldom [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Need help viewing the data on my CCTV hard drive on my windows PC

My father has a CCTV system for his auto shop and someone broke in and cut the power supply wire to his system and stole some stuff. He asked me to see if I could look at what's on the hard drive to show the police. I took the hard drive out of the CCTV box and hooked it to my PC via SATA and a power supply cable. I formatted the hard drive so I could access the files on my computer and recovered the .FLV files. There are 9 .flv files each different sizes that I can open using a .flv player. However, once I open the video files with the player, nothing happens. I don't see any video at all. A ..read more

Advice on NVR or PC

We have an ancient XVision 960H DVR at the office and because it’s so old, it suffers from a few exploits that allow hackers to take control. It’s been hacked three times now and each time it has a Wget command in the PPPOE parameters that downloads and runs a script. By the time I get to it, its DNS servers have been changed to malicious ones and it floods our network with outbound traffic, presumably denial of service to disrupt someone else. We can’t implement IP based whitelisting because the owner of the company cannot get a static address at his home. The DVR is now unplugged and will n ..read more

Any way to extend wireless CCTV range?

As the title suggests, I need to install a CCTV unit approximately 400 metres (437 yards) from my home and I was wondering if there are any solutions (both wired and wireless) to extend the range of the CCTV? Or perhaps do some CCTV rather than uploading directly connect to a cloud server from which I can regulate and record the CCTV? submitted by /u/Particular-Career-52 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

New system for 2 x small offices

Hi, We're in the market for a new CCTV system to be installed at two office locations. 20 cameras at office 1 and 6 at office 2. Two two offices are separated by a couple of hundred miles. Some cameras will be external, others internal. The footage from both sites should be accessible remotely, ideally through a single web interface that doesn't rely on out-of-date plugins. Cameras should be PoE as cabling already in place at one of the offices. What does everyone recommend? submitted by /u/sysbadger [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Can a spider fry a wire?

One of my security cameras randomly went out last week. They are hardwired. I tried to reset the camera with no luck but when I took it off the wall there was a giant black crispy spider on top of some of the wires inside. Could that short circuit the camera? I’m wondering if I can just replace that camera with a new one or if there is something else going on. All the other cameras work fine. Sorry if stupid question, I don’t have much experience with these cameras. submitted by /u/neffii [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Analog cameras showing a black band on the right

I just switched DVR from an iCatch to a Annke. I used to have one of the cameras showing a black band on the right and I thought that camera just was on its way out. After installing the new Annke DVR, that camera now displays fine, but a different camera started showing the same ‘defect’. However, it’s not like a part of the image is missing, it’s like the image is compressed horizontally from 16:9 to 4:3; I can actually see the image showing correctly when I reconnect the BNC connector, but it then switches to the ‘wrong format’ after a few seconds. How can I solve this? submitted by /u/ja ..read more
