The 1st Advisory Report published in August 2016 had 17 recommendations for an improved transport experience for various commuter groups. All recommendations were accepted by LTA and will be implemented progressively. This year, the Advisory Report reveals a deeper and richer understanding of our commuters’ voices, with a focus on our rail system. We sought to understand their preferences across different rail lines; their willingness to be engaged, involved and to contribute. MORE CHOICES FOR COMMUTERS WITH DTL3 The Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) which opens on 21 October will undoubtedly be a game changer for the commuters in the east as it will significantly shorten their travel time to the city and onwards to the west. MacPherson station, an interchange station, will link DTL3 to the Circle Line. Residents residing near Tampines and Expo stations on the East-West Line can also look forward to additional options getting to the city. The DTL is the latest addition to the Government’s stable of investments in new rail infrastructure, on which it will spend $20 billion ..read more

PTC to Consult Widely on New Fare Formula
Public Transport Council | Chairman's Blog
by Public Transport Council
3y ago
The current fare formula is valid for five years, from 2013 to 2017. Hence, it is timely for the Public Transport Council to review and recommend to the Government a new fare formula and mechanism. The Council will consult widely. We will be engaging our commuters, public transport operators, experts and other stakeholders. We welcome feedback and suggestions on how the fare formula can be improved. We will ensure that fares will remain affordable for our commuters. We will also consider the longer term financial viability of our public transport system. The views gathered from stakeholders wi ..read more

To better track the evolving point-to-point transport service sector in Singapore, I directed the Public Transport Council to expand the scope of the Taxi Customer Satisfaction Survey in 2016, to cover not only taxis, but also private hire cars. To reflect the change in scope, the survey was renamed the Point-to-point Transport Services Customer Satisfaction Survey (PCSS). Customer satisfaction Disruptive business models and technologies, such as Uber, Grab and third party taxi-booking apps, have caused an upheaval in the point-to–point transport services landscape. Taxi companies and taxi dri ..read more

The Council has just released the results of the 2016 Public Transport Customer Satisfaction Survey and I am pleasantly encouraged by the strong endorsement from our commuters. The 2016 survey showed that 96.4% of commuters were satisfied with their public transport experience – an improvement from 91.8% in 2015! The mean satisfaction score also saw a significant rise, from 7.2 in 2015 to 7.6 in 2016. What do the results of the survey mean? It is a significant validation that our commuters recognise and appreciate the hard work that have gone into improving our public transport services. This ..read more

The holiday season is approaching and some of us may have plans to travel overseas. Going abroad provides an opportunity to experience other public transport systems. When you do your travel planning, have you ever wondered how we “fare” in terms of how much we pay for our MRT fares compared to other countries? Here are some key findings from a study by UniSIM – comparing our rail fares with 35 major cities around the world: We had earlier shared an infographic comparing rail fares across eight major cities. The above graphs present a comprehensive comparison of major cities across Asia, Aus ..read more

Thinking about our commuters, PTOs and fares: finding the right balance
Public Transport Council | Chairman's Blog

The Public Transport Council (PTC) has received the fare applications from our Public Transport Operators (PTOs) SBS Transit and SMRT for the 2016 Fare Review Exercise. I am thinking about the 2016 fare exercise. We are in a unique situation of having a fairly large negative quantum of 5.7%. So it is no surprise that I have been asked if PTC will consider granting the full quantum for this Exercise. I need to do what is right for our commuters. I also need to do what is right for the PTOs. My colleagues and I in the PTC must find the right and proper balance. There is no silver bullet or easy ..read more
