This is a guest post from Robert McLachlan Global warming is accelerating; 2023 was off the charts. We need to stop burning fossil fuels. In New Zealand, transport accounts for half of all fossil fuels burnt. In the Emissions Reduction Plan, transport emissions fall 41% by 2035. As the Ministry of Transport says, “Achieving this will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and give us a more sustainable, inclusive, safe and accessible transport system that better supports economic activity and community life.” There is plenty of detail in the plan: Some parts have been scrapped (biofuels, scra ..read more

There are two major public consultations closing in the next week, Auckland Council’s Long Term Plan (LTP), and the draft Government Policy Statement on Land Transport (GPS). Closing dates and times: LTP closes Thursday 28 February, at 11.59pm – a minute to midnight! GPS closes Tuesday 2 April, at 12pm noon – note that’s Easter Tuesday. Both of these plans will steer investment priorities over the next ten years, with huge implications for things we care about – like great transport, safer streets, more homes, quality of life, and climate action. So it’s worth speaking ..read more

Rod Oram: a legacy to live up to
Greater Auckland

Yesterday we had the very sad news that business and climate journalist Rod Oram had died after having a heart attack while cycling through Ambury Park on Sunday. Rod was one of the absolute best at being able to communicate the connections and paths between how we live and how we could live – most especially and urgently in recent years, on the need for climate action and the abundant opportunities to achieve it in realistic and rewarding ways. He was also a kind and generous mentor to many, a witty and thoughtful interlocutor, and a builder of bridges – between different points of view, and ..read more

New Life for Light Rail
Greater Auckland

This is a guest post by Connor Sharp of Surface Light Rail  Light rail in Auckland: A way forward sooner than you think With the coup de grâce of Auckland Light Rail (ALR) earlier this year, and the shift of the government’s priorities to roads, roads, and more roads, it would be safe to assume light rail in Auckland is dead and buried for the next decade. But what if I told you that wasn’t the case? What if I told you that what we have is all of the ingredients for a successful revival of surface (also called practical) light rail in Auckland? Not 5 years in the future, but right now, to ..read more

The business section of the NZ Herald is full of opinion. Among the more opinionated of all is the ex-Minister of Transport, ex-Minister of Railways, ex MP for Auckland Central (1975-93, Labour), Wellington Central (1996-99, ACT, then list-2005), ex-leader of the ACT Party, uncle to actor Antonia, the veritable granddaddy of reckons himself: Richard Prebble CBE. Of course, with that lifetime of achievement behind him, he can claim to have had considerable influence on the state of our cities and transport networks over the decades. So it was with excitement that I started reading his opinion p ..read more

AT Need To Lift Their Game

Normally when we talk about accessing public transport it’s about improving how easy it is to get to, such as how easy is it to cross roads in a station/stop’s walking catchment, is it possible to cycle to safely, do bus connections work, or even whether are there new routes/connections that could be made to fix the gaps left by how our streets were designed. However, for many people in our society, the way we’ve designed out public transport network means they also need to question if that access will be available when they want to travel. That group includes, but isn’t limited to, people who ..read more

Greater Auckland

Sometimes it might not feel like it, but our public transport system is significantly better than what it was 10 to 15 years ago. However one area where Auckland Transport continue to really struggle is with events and the most recent weekend was no exception with complaints about trains from the Pink concert. The Herald reports: Pink wowed 45,000 fans during the first of her two Auckland concerts at Eden Park last night, but the city’s train network has left some with a sour aftertaste. Fans have described leaving the concert as “absolute carnage” as they faced 40 minute-to-one-hour-long wai ..read more
