Wire EDM parting

I've been looking at lots of satisfying "Zero tolerance" EDM machining videos recently and every time I see them finish a part they just leave a tiny tab at the end and then rip it off by hand, how does this not ruin the final tolerance?? I thought this would have to be done by supporting the other side so it wouldn't start to bend and cut away from the stock at an angle but they never seem to do that. Am I missing something? How is it normally done in production submitted by /u/ArmageddonCow [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

CNC tool changer custom gcode

I have a peculiar question. I have tool holder with rfid with information about tool measurment on it and a rfid reader at tool changer. How is tool data transfered to Siemens controler? That is, I know tool data can be transfered to CNC control via gcode but Im interested if that is how this system works or can gcode be executed at toolchange without messing up running program? submitted by /u/nccwarp9 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How coolant proof are Mitutoyo calipers?
Reddit » CNC

The shop I work for just rolled out a new program where every machine has a fully stocked toolbox assigned to it (we'll see how long it lasts) and each one has two pairs of calipers. An 8" and 6" pair of Mitutoyo calipers branded as "coolant proof". For obvious reasons, I'm not going to drop them in a bucket of coolant and leave them all day to see if they still work. I'm still curious how coolant proof they are. Does anyone have experience with them or similar products? submitted by /u/186Product [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Different linear rails on one machine

Hey, I am currently planning on building a new cnc router (100x60cm) and I'm not quite sure about the linear rails. So for the Z axis I'll use mgn15 rails which I already have and for the X axis I'll use sbr20 rails because hgr rails are to expensive for me in that size. I was planning on using hgr15 for the Y axis but they sold out when I wanted to buy them and now I am wondering if using hgr15 on one axis even makes sense if the other axis is still just sbr rails? Do I even need hgr15 rails for a router which will mostly cut wood and maybe some aluminum here and there or is it just a waste ..read more

MariTool thread mill cutting parameters

I bought a thread mill from MariTool to cut external threads on a stainless steel 304 rod in my mill. MariTool doesn't suggest feeds and speeds for their tools and every source or similar tools has a wide range for SFM from 80 up to 400. I've already instantly snapped another manufacturers small tool using their suggested F&S. So got a few questions since I'm new to thread milling. 1) What are reasonable F&S? 2) How many and size of stepover should I use (32 tpi, 0.3" dia tool) on SS304? Some sources say 10% of cutter diameter, half the thread depth, 98% then 2% and one says full dept ..read more
