A Primer on Geographic Pay
Don Jones

LinkedIn hit the news today, announcing that most of their employees would be allowed to continue working remotely if they desired, although they noted that employees who move to cheaper cities would have their pay adjusted (or “slashed,” as the New York Post somewhat pejoratively put it). This follows moves from companies like Facebook, who have adopted similar policies. A hue and cry was raised when Facebook set their policy, and I expect LinkedIn will receive similar commentary. I wanted to try and offer a non-opinionated backgrounder on these policies. Many companies include geography in t ..read more

The iPad-as-a-laptop Migration

A status report from August 2021. When Apple released their M1 MacBook Air, I got one. Fully loaded really, since there’s only a couple of possible configurations (the RAM is actually part of the processor configuration, as it has a unified memory model, so they only have a couple of RAM options). I love the Air: it’s lightweight, it lasts all day, and the Apple silicon version doesn’t even have a fan, because ARM rocks. I should note that I’m mainly a “knowledge worker;” I don’t need to run VMs or use any heavy-duty creative software, so the Air does everything I need. Almost. The biggest gri ..read more

Virtual “Career Fest” Shaping Up! Wanna Participate?
Don Jones

As previously announced, I’m putting together an online virtual “Career Fest” and it’s starting to really shape up. Here are the details: It’ll be the week of 4-October-2021. Registration will be free to paid Ampere Club members, $50 to everyone else. That’s mainly to ensure I can cover the platform and hosting costs. If it breaks even, I’ll be relieved and not get in trouble with @PSHDonsBoss. If it makes a profit, we’re planning to enrich a charity that helps people from disadvantaged background find their way into a tech career. I’m calling it AmpNavigator. There’ll be a separate companion ..read more

Call for Presentations: Virtual Career Fest
Don Jones

As part of my Ampere Club project, I’m putting together a virtual “Career Fest” event. The event is about helping people amplify their career outside of “hard” tech skills. The intent is to pre-record sessions (via Zoom or whatever you like), and optionally show up for a short, live Q&A at a scheduled time. Sessions can be 30-60m in length, and I’m looking for some of the following themes: Career skills: Contributing to a sense of belonging in your workplace Becoming a Daily Learner to keep your learning muscles strong How to approach job interviews How to be more effective in a multi-ge ..read more

Launching a New Side Gig About Careers
Don Jones
by Don Jones

On July 1st, I’m going to be formally launching a new project, but wanted to offer you a sneak peek. The purpose of the project is to provide career advice, guidance, direction, coaching, and networking. Working on career-oriented projects like Be the Master, Let’s Talk Business, and Own Your Tech Career have been tremendously rewarding, and I’ve been mulling over several ways in which I could offer more to people. I also wanted to find way to let people help each other, something I enjoyed doing immensely with PowerShell.org and other community projects. The project will be called the Ampere ..read more

Reduced Pricing on Many of my Fiction and Nonfiction/Tech eBooks!
Don Jones
by Don Jones

I’ve lowered the pricing on many of my eBooks on Amazon—and later this summer they’ll be rolling out to other ebook stores as well! All of these titles are now just $2.99 each (with equivalent pricing outside the US). You may need to allow 2-3 days for the new pricing to propagate. Most of these books are also free in Kindle Unlimited (“KU”) for a little bit longer. The first of these comes off “KU” in a few days, while the last comes off in early August. As they come off “KU,” they won’t renew, so if you intend to read them that way, get on it. Here’s the list: The Never: A Tale of Peter and ..read more

Going Full iPad
Don Jones

For some time now, I’ve been on a mission to see if I could go “full iPad.” I should provide some basic context: I’m not a “power user” by any stretch. These days, I’m essentially a “knowledge worker,” meaning I need the basic email / calendar / browser combo, along with some basic productivity apps (my company actually uses Google, so my “apps” are all web-based anyway). Because I write books, I do have some specialized needs in that area. I’ve had a 3rd-gen iPad Pro for some time, and there are numerous great keyboard options. I’m fine with a touch screen; I don’t do a lot of work that requi ..read more

Navigating the Taxes on Those Company RSUs and Other Equity Bits
Don Jones

I’ve recently been learning a LOT about this subject, and thought I’d share. NOTE: This is obviously only applicable in the US. Lots of companies, especially tech ones, include some form of equity in their total compensation package. Let’s start by getting some terminology right: A stock grant is when the company gives you a real, honest-to-goodness, tradable share of stock. You own income tax on the value of the total grant, and companies will often withhold that as part of the grant. Often times, they’ll grant you X number of shares, and then immediately sell some of those to generate cash ..read more

Constitution Class: Fifth Amendment
Don Jones

Along with the 1st and 2nd, the 5th is probably one of our most famous amendments. It gives you the legal right not to narc on yourself, but it’s had a broader impact than you might think. Here’s what it says: No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any ..read more
