BC Hepatitis Network
by Kerri MacKay

I joined the BC Hepatitis Network in late-September, specifically to support the community consultations for the BC Viral Hepatitis Elimination Roadmap and I hope you will join too.  The goal of this roadmap is to develop (and implement) recommendations toward a BC free from viral hepatitis. I had never worked with communities impacted by viral hepatitis, at least not explicitly. But I do come into this work with experience leading community consultations, and using those spaces as a tool for community building and healing, and self-determined advocacy. One principle I have with any consu ..read more

Decampments and implications for viral hepatitis
BC Hepatitis Network
by Kerri MacKay

On Wednesday, April 5, Vancouver Police and City of Vancouver staff began their most recent decampment of people and their housing structures from the Downtown Eastside. Bystanders estimated at least 100 police officers made their way to East Hastings Street and blocked off a large area, preventing people from entering past a certain perimeter. People living on the streets had to remove all their belongings. In these scenarios what belongings remain, unattended or otherwise, are trucked away to the landfill. If folks do not move along, they risk being ticketed or arrested.  There are now ..read more

World Social Work Day: Connections with Viral Hepatitis

“Ugh… always lube everywhere,” I mutter under my breath as I lower and lift my sticky hands off my cars steering wheel. I’ve just finished the current cohort’s education session on HIV and hepatitis C at the local treatment center, and part of the education includes safer sex. Internal condoms (one of my favourite things to teach about) are well lubricated so the lube sticks around for a while if you’re not able to wash your hands right away… Just part of the job!  This would have happened sometime between 2013 and 2015 in the Rutland neighbourhood of Kelowna. I graduated with my Bachelo ..read more
