Soller 'Firó' takes centre stage
Majorca Daily Bulletin News
by Shirley Roberts

The world revolves around all things ‘Fira and Firo’ this week. Real life is suspended as the traditional costumes, flags and patriotic music is heard. Some local people are leaving for the mainland and other boltholes for a few days. The noise, the people, and the inconvenience of life currently is too much for them. We lose our car parks, which become fairgrounds and exhibition stands. in the middle of a parking crisis. The Town Hall respond with ‘pop up’ car parks created out of fields. This causes all sorts of bother and is one of the reasons few want to be involved in local politics. The ..read more

Mallorca will reduce its cap on tourist accommodation by 18,000 beds, the equivalent of half the number of beds in the Playa de Palma, from a total of 430,000 to 412,000, a drop of 4.2%. The move was announced today (Friday) by the president of the Council de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, during a press conference accompanied by the island’s councillor for Tourism, José Marcial Rodríguez. It will be the first time that Mallorca has reduced its maximum number of places. “It is time to set limits,” said Galmés, because the growth has put the coexistence between tourists and residents “at risk”. As millions of Britons start dreaming of their summer holiday in Mallorca, the British media, fuelled by complaints from a handful of tourists, are having a field day with what is considered some rather sobering news - the price of alcohol has gone up in Mallorca over the past few years.
