Is Ethiopia safe now? No, Ethiopia is not safe to travel to at this time. It is not safe to even come to Addis Ababa at the moment. If you know me, you know I always recommend travelers to do my backpacking route–the Cape to Cairo route. This means you would normally pass through Ethiopia. However, this is not possible at the moment. I am not an overly cautious person. I backpacked for 7 months across Africa by myself. I fed a hyena out of my mouth in Harar. And I am the person who leaves the gas tank so low that I routinely break my promise to God never to do that again as long as I don’t end ..read more

Trekking with gorillas in Uganda was one of my favorite experiences during my 7-month backpacking trip. In fact, it’s still one of my top life experiences! I will never forget the moment after a couple of hours of hiking that I turned the corner and pushed leaves away only to be staring directly into the eyes of a Silverback Mountain Gorilla! I mean, he was two arms lengths away from me. And our eyes met. And we had a moment. Ha! Okay I know that sounds weird and maybe creepy, but you’ll know what I mean when you go trekking with gorillas in Uganda too! After years of helping people travel Afr ..read more

Is Ethiopia Safe? On Saturday morning, I woke up in Addis Ababa to thousands of people walking past my street wearing shirts in honor of Dr. Abiy. Who is Dr. Abiy? My husband and I were in a great mood. In his few short months, the new prime minister, Dr. Abiy has brought about so much peace, stability, and made daring comments that I never thought I’d see in Ethiopia. Seriously…. I have so much respect for this man! I joined with some of the supporters as they made their way to Meskel Square where there was a pro-peace, pro-Dr Abiy rally. Millions of people came! I left early and headed to us ..read more
