A Plantation man who police say killed his wife and toddler before trying to take his own life served in the military and had recently reached out for help to address his mental health.
Forty-year-old Jean Carlos Aponte is in critical condition at the hospital after an apparent self-induced drug overdose. On Tuesday, his wife Sara Ashley Gama, 38, and 2-year-old son, Ethan, were found dead inside their home.

Newly released surveillance video captured two alleged arsonists setting a Hialeah barbershop ablaze last week.
The fire happened last Friday at Fresh Parras Barbershop on West 1st Avenue and 49th Street.
Miguel Reyes Jr., 38, and Alberto Gonzalez, 56, were caught on CCTV committing the act and causing about $100,000 in damages, according to police.
Authorities said the surveillance footage shows Reyes, wearing a mask, using a pipe wrench to shatter the front glass door. Another man — later identified as Gonzalez — is seen throwing two Molotov cocktails made from what appears to be Mason jars ..read more

Police in Fort Lauderdale are investigating after a couple was found shot to death in a home last week.
The discovery was made just before 7:30 p.m. Friday at a home in the 600 block of Southwest 30th Terrace.
Fort Lauderdale Police officials said officers responded to the home and found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Police haven’t released their identities but said they were married.
A homicide investigation was begun to determine if foul play was involved and detectives learned the couple’s vehicle was missing from their home.

The private jet belonging to Sean “Diddy” Combs returned to South Florida Wednesday, days after the music mogul’s mansions in Miami Beach and Los Angeles were raided by federal agents.
The jet arrived at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport shortly before noon. Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed the dark-colored plane parked on the tarmac.
Just 48 hours earlier, the rap star was seen pacing back and forth at the same airport, as seen on video obtained by TMZ.

Investigators began collecting evidence Wednesday from the cargo ship that plowed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused its collapse, while in the waters below divers searched through twisted metal for six construction workers who plunged into the harbor and were feared dead.
The bodies of two men, ages 35 and 26, were recovered from the water, Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., secretary of Maryland State Police, announced at a news conference. They were located by divers inside a red pickup submerged in about 25 feet of water near the bridge’s middle span.

A Coral Springs man was arrested after authorities said he attacked his family with a knife after smoking a THC vape pen.
Alexander Figueroa, 21, was arrested Saturday on attempted murder and aggravated battery charges, records showed.
According to the arrest report, Figueroa was walking around a neighborhood with his cousin when he started acting strange.

Gov. DeSantis announced during a news conference held Wednesday in Orlando that Florida is “ending the squatter scam.”
“The squatter scam ends today with my signature on this piece of legislation and the state of Florida will be better for it,” said DeSantis.
Before this bill, squatters were considered to be tenants and there would need to be a process to evict them. But now, this bill strips squatters of those rights.

Allies of Gov. Ron DeSantis and Disney reached a settlement agreement Wednesday in a state court fight over how Walt Disney World is developed in the future following the takeover of the theme park resort’s government by the Florida governor.
