1. Describe your experience, training, and/or expertise in the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
My first experience of NLP began in 1981 when I was assisting a non-verbal communication researcher with her library. On her shelf was a copy of Frogs into Princes, by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. I read the book and found it to be fascinating. At that time I had a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy and I was very interested in experiential learning and non-verbal communication.
I attended my first three-day NLP workshop in 1981 when I was 26 years old. I studied with Anne Linden ..read more

Many clients of mine find social situations challenging. Some feel comfortable with only a few people and others feel better when it is a large crowd and they are anonymous. I had the opportunity to interview Jamie, a friend, whom I observed at a small party when he came alone and only knew the hosts.
For our modeling process we spoke over the phone and while I was typing on the keyboard, Jamie was taking his run around Central Park. His ability to do more than one thing is no surprise. Perhaps that will be something else to model in the future. Here are some his beliefs regarding this issue o ..read more

How to Build a Bad Relationship by Steven Leeds
We all enter into relationships with certain communication skills. Some will lead to healthy ways of relating that will be mutually satisfying and some not. Some will last a lifetime and some will lead to an early exit. Most of the things we do, we do without actually knowing how we do them. We do them unconsciously.
If you are reading this blog, then you are probably someone who would like to improve your communication skills. But before describing how we can improve our relationships, I would like to start by describing ways that we harm relati ..read more

NLP 4 TH GENERATION: Reported by Rachel Hott, PhD with additional commentary from Colette Normandeau.
Rachel Hott wrote this article after she and Steven Leeds attended the NLP Leadership Summit in Alicante, Spain in January 2018. It will be published soon in a book titled, Powered by NLP, Volume 2.
Day 3, January 14 th , 2018, at the NLP Leadership Summit, and 17 of us were choosing to explore what is beyond this latest iteration called NLP. “What will the 4 th generation bring,” we pondered. Simultaneously, 62 other attendees were in groups discussing standards, marketing, bra ..read more

Steven Leeds and I participated in the NLP Leadership Summit in Alicante, Spain on January 12-14 with 79 other NLP Leaders. There were NLP trainers, authors, educators, business coaches and therapists from all parts of the world to have a conversation about NLP. Although the summit is leaderless, we did have two facilitators, Heidi Heron, from Australia (born in the U.S.) and Michael Hall from the United States who made sure that we stayed on point, found ways to be respectful and created a format for us to follow. The phrase, ‘herding cats,” was used quite often to describe a variety of ourgr ..read more

Many people come to me because they want to change. But often their focus is on changing someone else, believing that in order to experience a state of well-being, they must first get another person to change. This makes for ongoing dissatisfaction, “controlling behavior (feeling out of control),” and blaming others (for what they are doing or not doing).
Here are some things people try to do that keeps them stuck:
Get someone to love me, so I feel lovable. Get someone to acknowledge me, so I can feel validated. Get someone to stop judging me, so I will feel accepted. Get someone to listen to ..read more

I was appointed as her professional executor and when I contacted her patients to notify them about her death, a patient told me that she had written down several sayings that she had learned from my Mom, which she and my Mom called, “Dr. Hott’s Toolbox.” I told her I would love to read them. She sent me 15, and then I shared them with my Mom’s other patients and they added more sayings to the toolbox and from 15 the toolbox grew to 48.
I have shared “Dr. Hott’s Toolbox,” with our NLP students, friends and family. I have enjoyed the responses. For example, one family member said that her broth ..read more

What does Dilbert have to do with Hypnosis? Many people are familiar with the Dilbert cartoon, a cartoon satirizing the workplace environment since 1989. While many people know that Scott Adams is the artist who created Dilbert they may not know that he had studied hypnosis, until recently. Apparently in the late 1970’s he had taken a hypnosis training because his mom had described using hypnosis when she had given birth to his younger sister and he was curious about the process. Now 40 years later, Adams has begun to share more about his hypnosis experiences and ways that he uses language wit ..read more
