NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming, uses perceptual, behavioural, & communication techniques to help people change their thoughts & actions. NLP was originally developed by Dr Richard Bandler and John Grinder. They observed sessions by psychotherapists such as Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson, identifying common patterns and positive suggestions which they used to help their clients change. Once they had identified these patterns, Bandler and Grinder applied them in their own sessions and were able to reproduce similar results. This was the origin of the first NLP model ..read more

NLP School Blog

Many managers and HR Professionals attend our NLP courses, and in this article, we explain some of the key benefits they gain by using NLP techniques. To manage and mentor competent people, especially millennials, using traditional management methods simply do not work, or worse, can alienate people, in today’s workplace. NLP was created to find out what were the ‘magic beans’ of effective communicators: salespeople, leaders, and therapists. One of the discoveries that these professionals had in common was an ability to help people to feel ‘seen’ and understood. But how do you actually achiev ..read more

The Meta Model – How Beliefs Are Born
NLP School Blog
by Robbie Steinhouse

Working with beliefs in coaching is a fundamental part of helping clients achieve positive change. The Meta Model was the first model of NLP and was designed to help identify and categorise limiting beliefs into three groups: distortions, generalizations, and deletions. These categories are influenced by the famous linguist Noam Chomsky and this post will give a summary of how to use this model to identify these beliefs and open up more flexible options. NLP was co-created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s, aiming to study and model excellence in human behaviour and communicatio ..read more

Being Perfect Is The Problem!

Being perfect is the problem! Psychologist Carl Rogers emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and being enough rather than striving for perfection, he also highlighted the significance of unconditional positive regard, both from oneself and for others. This involves accepting and valuing oneself regardless of achievements or failures (which are also subjective) , as well as extending empathy, understanding, and acceptance towards others. Through this process, individuals can build a foundation of self-worth that is not contingent upon external validation, or the pursuit of perfection ..read more

NLP Practitioner Training – Why did I do it?
NLP School Blog

There is a saying in coaching and therapy: “The presenting problem is never the real problem.” Looking back to when I did my first NLP Practitioner training twenty years ago, I believed at that time that NLP would give me some new skills to help me manage my business and thereby help my overwhelmed and highly stressed state. Overwhelmed and Needing Help Like many people, I had become skilled at certain competencies at business, such as sales and finance, but not good at the other skills involving inspiring and managing my own staff. This is because I spent the first ten years of my career be ..read more

Identity Coaching: The Most Delicate of Journeys.
NLP School Blog

This video explains some principles about identity coaching which I use to introduce my course next month. One of the key ideas I will be covering in this course will be a process called Rescripting. I often felt that I wanted to be both a happy and successful person, but somehow my outward success came with a deep sense of anxiety. NLP helped me explore and heal much of this, but somehow, I still felt at some deep level that ‘I am an anxious person.’ I was rereading a book on Transactional Analysis in 2002, when I spontaneously experienced a profound healing with different imagery. When I fou ..read more

Why Your Inner-Voice Is Not as Helpful as You May Think
NLP School Blog

In this video, I cover principles of how our thoughts can be expressed as an inner-voice and some reasons why that inner-voice may not always be helpful to us. I also discuss the intriguing quote, “The child is father of the man” by William Wordsworth (another way of putting this is our inner parental voice was created in our childhood). I personally believe that we all experience an ‘Inner-Voice’ that tries to ‘force’ us to believe we ‘should’ or ‘can’t’ do certain things and also to react against these commands. This inner-voice is not always helpful to us, yes, it can be a powerfully motiv ..read more

How can creative writing enrich coaching and NLP?
NLP School Blog

As a budding author of fiction, my wife Anna arranged a creative writing lesson for me with her friend and author Hattie Edmonds. I was amazed to note how the ‘process’ fitted nearly exactly into Dilts’ & Gilligan’s six-step Generative Coaching structure. It also featured many principles I was familiar with from my job as an NLP trainer. I hope this blog will show how coaching can utilise the ancient wisdom of the narrative structure to promote significant change. I also hope that it will provide a broad template to write or follow any other creative endeavour. Firstly, let me contrast the ..read more

What characteristics make for someone having a happy and successful career?
NLP School Blog
by Robbie Steinhouse

This question of what characteristics make for a successful and happy career is simple, but not simplistic: it is probably the most important question we need to ask of ourselves. For me, the answer comes in NLP’s essential approach to archetype psychology. Archetypes have existed throughout human history in storytelling – the fight between good and evil is the most obvious one. However, it is often best to frame this as the fight between our positive qualities and our response related to our greatest fears – our positive archetypes and our challenging shadows. But how can all this be useful i ..read more
