Welcome to my Air Force Journey! I am a prior enlisted Lieutenant who commissioned after 11 years of enlisted service. I applied for Officer Training School (OTS) in 2015 and commissioned before the end of the year. I have been running this blog since I found out I was selected for OTS, and am passionate about helping people through all stages of their Air Force journey.

Future LT,
Welcome! Below are the most recent Fiscal Year 24 Air Force and Space Force Board Schedules.
The date you are most concerned with is the “AFRS Application Cut-Off”. As you can see below, there are two board types; Rated and Non-Rated.
Both the Rated and Non-Rated boards have different requirements so it’s important to decide what officer Air Force Speciality Code (AFSC) you desire and then backward plan.
Lastly, the “24OTSCAD” board, is essentially a rolling board where applicants with critically needed degrees can apply at any time throughout the Fiscal Year.  ..read more

It has been so long that I wrote that it is difficult to even know where to begin. If you were keeping track of my timeline, I commissioned in 2015 which means that I pinned on Captain in 2019. Coincidentally, that is when my posts started to fall off as well. Although not deliberate, this seems to be the natural order of things. I remember early on following some of the forums and Facebook groups and noticing the authors seemed to have an online life expectancy. I told myself I didn’t want that to be me, and yet here we are.

I started civilian pilot training! While this only partially explains where I have disappeared to over the past few years, I thought this audience might be interested in my journey as a pilot. I never really had the desire to fly. When I was a kid my dad had a friend who loved aviation, and we went to a few aviation museums and maybe even a few airshows. Airplanes were vaguely interesting to me as a child, but the luster wore off as I ventured into video games and pestering my siblings while climbing trees and riding bikes. Enlisting in the Air Force was a practical decision which provided opp ..read more

Blue Line Ceremony
You will have your “blue line” ceremony. Personally, I thought this was anti-climatic. After which, the instructors give you the impression that OTS is going to get so much harder. Although training does seem to get more intense, it only stays this way for a few weeks. Manage your time effectively. We had our Physical Fitness Baseline test this week. This one “doesn’t count”, but hopefully, you came in shape and score high, because if you get hurt later, they MAY be able to use this score for your graduation requirement.

For this week, you will mostly be “herded” around and getting yelled at when making mistakes. It’s not particularly difficult, but, might be stressful for you depending on your experience and personality. Try to learn the dining facility procedures as quickly as possible. Try to set up and standardize you and your flight members’ dorm rooms according to the dorm manual. You will spend a significant time practicing individual drill and marching. On the weekend, my flight got a surprise visit from the OTS staff in our dorms and we were given about 5 minutes to strip ..read more

General
The most important thing is preparing yourself physically because physical training at OTS may not be sufficient enough to get you where you need to be. Look up Air Force PT requirements and gauge yourself–aim for scoring into the 90’s (excellent). Ensure you complete all your WINGS computer-based training beforehand. You CAN study the OTSMAN if you want to mitigate potential yelling when you arrive, but, it’s not necessary as you will have ample time to study it. If you are a non-prior, it’s not a bad idea to get familiar with individual drill movements (standin ..read more

I received this from a follower, thank you! This will be a series of posts with an updated experience from OTS in 2021. I’ll sprinkle in some of my own personal updates, a lot has happened in the past few years.

Overall, OTS is designed to stress you out and see how you manage your time, prioritize tasks, how you work in teams, and your ability to lead and follow others. One piece of advice is to try your hardest to realize it’s structured to TRY and get a rise out of you emotionally, so the sooner you can recognize this, the easier will be. In other words, i ..read more
