The Evolution of a Philadelphia Flower Farm:  Like so many, I started flower farming with just a basic plan in mind.  See if I could grow flowers in Philadelphia and if I could sell them.  That was pretty much it.  That first season, I never thought about what it would be like to do this work in 15 years. And here we are 15 years later.  The 2023 growing season has wrapped up and I am once again in my winter planning mode, considering the evolution of my Philadelphia flower farm.  At the start, I sold flowers at two farmers markets.  Then a handful of weddin ..read more

Glimpses at a Regenerative Flower Farm in Summertime
Love 'n Fresh Flowers

Despite the summer-long drought, our regenerative flower farm is abundant and boisterous with life and blooms.  While it has been a challenging season, our life-filled soil has been supporting our crops.  We’ve adopted a new method for irrigating called “pulse watering” that uses less water while providing the soil with more moisture.  A regenerative flower farm is as much a massive science experiment as it is a farm while we tweak and test systems and methods to improve our ecosystem.  I’ve begun re-reading Braiding Sweetgrass recently.  This beautiful book is a near ..read more

The rollercoaster ride of pandemic-era weddings continued in 2021.  We worked with our couples to navigate the ups and downs with grace, adjusting course whenever needed.  Guest counts reduced at first and then exploded in the summer as everyone itched to let loose and party!  One silver lining to pandemic wedding planning is that no one takes it lightly and every decision is made with intention and one careful underlying thought:  is this really important to us? As many elements of weddings shifted, one piece remained important to the ritual of vowing to love another th ..read more

15 Tried-and-True Native Plants for North American Flower Farmers

15 Tried-and-True Native Plants for North American Flower Farmers I have had this long-standing dream for my farm that has finally come to fruition this season: an all-native bouquet, including fillers, foliages and focal flowers. It took several seasons of curating a diverse collection of perennials and shrubs – culling some and adding others – to be able to make bouquets of only-native ingredients that are beautiful and long-lasting for our customers. And while it’s not really feasible to have a flower farm of only native plants, it is incredibly valuable for every farm to add as many nati ..read more

Cover Crops for Flower Farming Rule #1: Keep the Soil Covered at ALL Times Rarely in the diverse world of agriculture is there one golden rule and one silver bullet for every single farm.  But when it comes to soil health and long-term farm sustainability, there is: never leave the ground bare and exposed.  Without something covering it, soil is at risk of erosion and the vast cosmos of life that inhabit the soil experience high mortality from exposure and lack of food.   Fertility takes a huge hit when ground is left bare, particularly with continuous mechanical tillage ..read more
