To: Dan Ashton MLA, Dan Albas MP,  and Premier David Eby: Good morning gentlemen. The attached article appeared in this week’s Peachland View. It caught my attention as an emergency physician with past experience in major disaster planning because it describes an excellent emergency response not only by healthcare professionals but by the ordinary people in our surrounding communities who responded with compassion and generosity. Unfortunately, four people died in this tragic event and several were seriously injured. The authors of the letter, Jane and Don Rampone of Kelowna sai ..read more

Heart mosaic. Photo Paula McLaughlin. Paula McLaughlin We are a few weeks past the excitement of the holiday season, and the local merchants have exchanged red and green decorations for red and pink – that means Valentine’s Day and February are the next celebration on our calendars. The Peachland Arts Council is gearing up for their annual HeARTS Festival, which happens this year between Feb. 7 – 13. There will be a full week of celebrations around the community, with many interest groups participating. This festival has been going since 2002, but of course, COVID stopped the in-person event ..read more

Dan Albas MP When I first was elected as a Member of Parliament, I fast discovered it was not uncommon for citizens to share personal documents with me on issues they were finding to be challenging to deal with when it comes to the federal government. While that fact has not changed, what has surprised me is the extent to how much the list of challenges has grown. Some examples: Many citizens can longer receive a passport within a reasonable period of time. Immigration backlogs have never been worse and some citizens, to their shock and dismay, discover supporting documents to their applicatio ..read more

Joanne Layh The community centre’s 30-year-old air conditioning and heating units are past their serviceable life and in need of replacement, director of community services Cory Labrecque said in a report delivered to council on Tuesday. Replacing key components of the HVAC system is estimated to set the town back close to $100,000, although it is hoped that grant funding will cover a substantial portion of the cost. Labrecque says he expects to find out around January if an $82,389 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Disaster Risk Reduction – Climate Adaptation grant application is successful ..read more

This afternoon Peachland Legion vice president Jean Saul and Peachland Community Connects members Alex Morrison, Madeleine Nixon, Shelley Sweeney, and Lynne Herrin (shown left to right) gathered in front of the Legion mural to present Kelowna Stands with Ukraine president Denys Storozhuk (third from left) with a cheque for $2,316. Photo Microplastics Okanagan Don Urquhart You’ve probably heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – a 1.6 million square kilometre patch of plastic and floating trash in the Pacific Ocean – but here in the waterways of the Okanagan we have our own plastic problem – microplastics. In a first ever study in the Okanagan water basin, a small team embarked in 2021 on a “scoping study” to gain a better understanding if microplastics are present in Okanagan Lake and Kelowna’s municipal wastewater. Spoiler alert: microplastics were found at every sampling location. Microplastics are tiny pieces of ..read more
