Squirrel Grooming
One Gray Squirrel very tenderly and carefully grooms another as the last golden warm rays of the sun fall on their oak tree. Squirrels often take turns grooming each other removing fleas and various other bugs and potential parasites. These two got a little self conscious toward the end when they realized their private moment was not so private. After hatching it is about 26 days till fledging - or Late April. Last year all three owlets started out heal ..read more

Limpkin The Calls and Sounds of Florida's Loudest Bird
Limpkins are Notorious for their shrieking, crying and screaming calls especially by males during the breeding season where they can call all through the night. They are right up there with sand hill cranes as Florida's loudest bird! Limpkins are the only living species in their family, Aramidae. They look like rails or cranes but DNA testing has confirmed that they are a unique family unto themselves. Florida is the historical northern limit of the limpkins range where they are year-round residents. they were nearly driven to extensio ..read more

Why Doves Hold Their Wings Straight up
Many examples of this fascinating Dove behavior. Mourning Doves have interesting bathing habits in the wild that are not well-documented. Florida Screech Owls Live From The Nest Box
I think Mother Screech Owl Luna from last year is back and laid her first egg early on February 27th. She'll probably lay an egg every other day until there are 3 or 4 then its 26 days till hatching and about another 26 days til fledging - or Late April early May. I haven't positively ID'd the father yet, last year Odie was a red morph so we'll see if he's still around this season, I suspect he is. Last year all three owlets started out healthy and then died of what experts suspect was avian flu. Hopefully all will go well this season. Filmed ins ..read more

Blue Jays Dive Bombing and Mobbing Hawk
Its not that uncommon to see Blue Jays trying to intimidate hawks – called mobbing - but this 5 minute divebombing sequence is exceptional. This beautiful Red Shouldered Hawk was planning to bask in the sun, relax and preen its feathers high in a pine tree overlooking the Backyard. But the Backyard Blue Jay clan has other ideas. Around here the Bigger red shouldered hawks are death on squirrels and snakes while the smaller more stealthy Coopers Hawks are more often the bird killers. The Blue Jays are the security guards of the backyard always paying ..read more
