A story about chewing gum
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

I thought it was time I wrote a post dedicated our tiny friend chewing gum. We as humans love the stuff, we sometimes chew it noisily on the underground or when we're talking to people. It's a handy candy that freshens the breath. Ever noticed how the taste and mintyness wares off super quick tho!? Now the responsible amongst us place these extinct sticky things into the nearest waste bin, but there is the other half of the population that simply spit them onto the ground, or drop them onto it. We've all seen those cardboard posters placed on lamposts to encourage people to dispose of them ..read more

Fireworks, it's almost time again
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

Fireworks are almost upon again us here in the UK, perhaps they've already even started where you are. It's always a tough one for animal lovers and those that love fireworks. On one hand, you have a fun family night with lots of Oooohs and Ahhhhs and neck craning. Let's face it even pet owners like fireworks, owning a pet doesn't make you immune. It does however maybe make you more aware of the potential effects.  Perhaps you're one of the lucky pet owners, then your pet doesn't bat an eyelid, barely notices them or is tone deaf. Wonderful, we all hope to be those kinds of owners! In ..read more

A few recent funnies
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

So it's reached that time again when I'm due a holiday (ok that is pretty much all the time) and you're in need of a light-hearted blog. So it's time for some recent funnies; This first one was provided by a vet I recently worked with who said: Last week we had another special in the clinic. This guy walked into the practice and the receptionist was on the phone, she acknowledged him coming in and he entered the waiting room whilst she was finishing off her call. In that time he looked at all the dog and cat food, perused the missing cat posters. Annoyingly played with some cat toys on the r ..read more

How the profession is changing....
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

Corporate or Independent? So locuming around you certainly get to see the best and worst of practices, that's a given. However the above question seems to keep cropping up in my world. What's everyone's opinion on this one? I'd be interested to hear your views. My career overall has seen more time spent in Independently owned practices - they are a private enterprise either with one owner or a limited number of partners, they tend to only have one or two branches. The boss is normally a vet who works at the branch, with a practice manager (quite often their other half) working there too ..read more

Not a hump day that I ever want to repeat
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

Today can only be described as the day from HELL.! Now I as you probably know by now have been nursing for more years than I can remember, I know about stress and I know just how busy and ill-equipped vet practices can be. But wow today just took the prize for the most unnecessarily stressful day yet. So I started my shift, early as usual and stupidly put the kettle on thinking I'll set the scene for how the day may pan out....I never got to make that cuppa. For no sooner had I clicked it on the other nurse came through and said 'I've had the area manager on the phone and the ..read more

Post Christmas & Pre New Year
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

It feels like it's been an age since I last wrote a blog post, in reality, it hasn't been but I've certainly squeezed in a bit more travelling in between :). I hope you all had a lovely Christmas, I certainly overindulged as per usual and am now feeling it and must start up that exercise regime again that's for sure!   I also experienced locuming in a bit city for the first time prior to Xmas. By big I mean capital and wow the variety of clients was immense. So many pets needing passports for those jet-setting owners. Other than that I encountered much of the same, it doesn't ma ..read more

Oncology and what I learnt as a vet nurse
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

Recently my eyes have been well and truly opened to the world that is Oncology. Prior to this, I had a sketchy knowledge and experience of oncology, I mean most general practice nurses have encountered say Vincristine or invasive lump removals etc. But I really found my knowledge was limited to 'Oh bugger it has Mets in its chest' - outcome Euthanasia. To an occasional purple topped Cytoxic sharps bin, to the grading of cancerous lumps. What I'm getting at is, we refer these cases, it's as basic as that. We refer them because there's is someone more specialised than us to deal with them, an ..read more

Fears Of A Veterinary Nurse - Take Three - Bites
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

Ahhh I hear you say, finally she's writing another Fears Of A Veterinary Nurse :) Am I right? So it's time I speak about the worst offender of them all - The dreaded Animal bite. I had naively thought that after a 12 year career I was doing pretty well, that was until this year!  Slight disclaimer here, scratches are just as bad and I've encountered a fair few of those over my career in fact my best one liner is 'I'll never get a career as a hand ware model anymore!' I know I'm sooo funny :p. I've had plenty of nips as well.  Anyways as usual I digress; My first ever bite in pra ..read more

Abscesses - Cats, Rabbits and why us nurses love them!
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse
by

To this day I have yet to meet a veterinary nurse that does not like abscesses, so why the heck not dedicate a whole blog post to the things!? Wow to it being October already, so many things have happened this year already! However I thought I'd reflect back on a cute kitten I met late last year so here he is:  The best abscess I've witnessed to date and played an active role in was in practice last year. A poor little ginger kitten came in to see us with a suspected broken hind leg. The leg was so swollen and hot, I'm talking the entire leg. We did some x-rays but hurrah the leg was in ..read more

Veterinary Nursing Rocks....Sometimes
Funny goings on of a Veterinary Nurse

My week started like any other, I was assigned a ward. I already listened to the daily rounds, but I must admit bar a few bits I was off on a daydream somewhere else. So I collect my tools don my gloves and get to work. Spoiler alert, always listen to rounds! As I went to put a lead on a very large boxer cross bulldog not only did she let out the deepest growl, she also turned around and lunged for me….thankful for the buster collar she was wearing I backed slowly well lets be honest I ran from her kennel. However always up for a challenge I tried once more, more of a lasso to avoid gett ..read more
