Horseracing Wrongs 5-year-old Go With Honor was killed training at Finger Lakes this morning; the “report”: “received a fx to the 3rd metatarsal of the left hind limb.” Did you get that, he “received” the fracture. Sick. GWH, by the way, is the 67th horse to perish at a NYS track this year. But it (the killing) is getting better all the time, right? View original post ..read more

Blood on Their Hands

Horseracing Wrongs We activists talk often about horses falling through the ranks – their value dropping with their “production” as they make their way from elite tracks to seedy racinos. More often than not, this ends badly – for most, slaughter, for others, simply being run into the ground, with each successive “connection” trying to suck one last dime from the increasingly spent horse. The recently deceased 9-year-old Ike Walker (below) is a prime example of the latter. Ike was made by Buck Pond Farm in January 2012. Like the chattel he was, Ike was peddled for $125,000 at a Keeneland ye ..read more

Ohio Carnage: Two Killed at Thistledown Yesterday

Horseracing Wrongs At 1:24 yesterday at Thistledown, Sweetnessncharm “suffered a catastrophic injury before the half mile pole” of race 2 – “and was euthanized.” He was four years old. About 2 1/2 hours later, The Tabulator “suffered a catastrophic injury past the eighth pole” of race 7 – “and was euthanized.” He was six years old. At the end of the clip, you will see the The Tabulator, surely terrified, running on his broken leg, to his death… That’s two kills, same track, same day. And Ohio taxpayers, because all Buckeye tracks are racinos, helped – for the vast majority, unwittingly – ma ..read more

Horseracing Wrongs Back in March, I wrote about Sequana, one of the worst track-cruelty cases yet. Shortly thereafter, owing to our pressure, Sequana was released from his servitude at the nefarious Camarero Race Track. And a few days ago, I received the following: “Thank you for the work you do. I recently adopted Sequana from Second Chance Thoroughbreds in Spencer, NY. That organization received him out of Puerto Rico and started rehabilitating him. In researching his background I came across your post about Sequana. This horse is kind, well mannered and enjoys people. Given what this hors ..read more

More Animal Abuse From Ruidoso, Delaware

Horseracing Wrongs “The All American Quarter Horse Futurity Trials” were held at Ruidoso Downs yesterday. As the name implies, all the entrants were babies, 2-year-olds. As you can imagine, and as I’ve documented several times in the past, there were multiple “bumps” and “fractious” horses, even a “flipped [in] paddock.” But there were also no less than four “vanned off,” two in the same race: One Famous Candy, Jam Candy (also “fell”), Favorite Blues Man, and Jm Special Ferarri. Then this, Wednesday at Delaware Park: On a sweltering day, there were 28 “scratches.” 28 over just 9 races. While ..read more

Excellent Piece on Saratoga and Our Activism

Horseracing Wrongs In its August issue, the Hill Country Observer did a long cover story on Saratoga Race Course – and us: “For the love of horses: Animal rights activists target Saratoga’s crown jewel.” The full piece merits your attention, but before you read, a thought. The journalist, Stacey Morris, who I feel was exceedingly fair, of course went to the other side for comments/retorts. NYRA, as expected, just dished more of the same, old, tired subterfuge they’re famous for: “NYRA is committed to implementing science-driven best practices to establish and maintain safe racing surfaces an ..read more
