The Ultimate Guide to the Best Vegan Chicken
Mercy For Animals Blog

Chickens are one of the most consumed animals worldwide and are subjected to some of the worst factory-farming practices. They are typically crammed into sheds by the tens of thousands where they spend their lives on waste-soaked litter. Most chickens raised for meat are selectively bred to grow so rapidly that they often suffer heart disease, organ failure, and chronic pain. Many struggle to stand or walk to reach food and water. The chicken industry treats these birds as products, ignoring their ability to feel. Factory farming not only causes billions of birds immense suffering—it creates b ..read more

Big news! Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) just introduced the Pigs and Public Health Act (PPHA) in the House of Representatives. This groundbreaking bill aims to reduce the number of downed pigs—those too sick, exhausted, or injured to stand or walk—in the food system by setting standards for care in farms and during transport. It also seeks to protect downed pigs who arrive at slaughterhouses. Backed by Mercy For Animals and the ASPCA, the PPHA would help safeguard public health and spare hundreds of thousands of animals unnecessary pain and suffering. Representative Escobar and nine other membe ..read more

The Pigs and Public Health Act would improve conditions for suffering pigs and address food-safety threats. WASHINGTON (July 11, 2024) — Mercy For Animals and the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) commend Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) for introducing the Pigs and Public Health Act to address the serious threat of nonambulatory, or “downed,” pigs in the food system. Each year, about half a million pigs arrive at U.S. slaughterhouses so sick, exhausted or injured that they cannot stand. These pigs are often “saved for last” and left lying in waste for hours ..read more

What Whole Foods Doesn’t Want You to Know About Its Chicken
Mercy For Animals Blog

In the name of profit, the chicken industry has selectively bred chickens to grow increasingly larger and faster over the past century. Its goal? To produce as much meat as possible in the least time. The industry’s greed, along with high consumer demand for chicken meat, has resulted in extreme suffering for billions of birds each year. That is why Mercy For Animals is calling on Whole Foods to publish a time-bound plan for fulfilling its pledge to stop sourcing meat from ultrafast-growing chicken breeds.  The left-hand chicken is a breed from 1957. The middle chicken is a breed from 197 ..read more

Mercy For Animals Blog
by Kimberly Johnson

Shrimp are the most farmed animals in the world, with an estimated 440 billion killed each year for human consumption. Farmed shrimp are forced to live in horrible conditions and endure gruesome farming practices, including “eyestalk ablation”—removal of one or both of their eyestalks, the antenna-like shafts that support the animals’ eyes. But do we need to worry about how shrimp are treated? Do they have feelings? Scientific Evidence: They may not look or act like other animals, but growing evidence and research suggest that it’s highly likely shrimp can feel pain, and it’s possible they ha ..read more
