I've been using NASTRAN for a while and I'm now wondering if it could be a good choice to spend some time designing some software tools for processing/pre-/post- using MATLAB. Is it a good tool for performing finite element modeling and analysis or is it limited/not so simple? I have been using the PDE toolbox once or twice and it looked a bit entry-level to me. Is it possible to generate and work on 3D meshes? How does one assemble FEM matrices? Also, how are its capabilites for HPC?
