APPG publishes update of report on the impact on poverty of £20 increase
APPG Poverty | News

At the beginning of the year, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Poverty published a report on the impact on poverty of not maintaining the £20 increase to universal credit (UC) and working tax credits (WTC), and of not extending this to legacy and other benefits. This drew on evidence from individuals and civil society organisations. Nine months since the APPG’s first report on the issue, the £20 increase is coming to the end of its six-month extension, which was granted in April 2021. The APPG recommended in January that the government should keep the £20 increase and extend it to l ..read more

Despite increases to the National Living Wage, levels of poverty within working households continue to rise. The number of children in relative poverty in households where all the parent(s) work full time – be they single or couple-parents – has doubled from 200,000 in 2012/13 to 400,000 in 2017/18 (CPAG, 2020). The government promotes work as the best route out of poverty; however, this is not always guaranteed as 75% of children growing up in relative poverty live in a household where at least one person works (DWP, 2021). The APPG is calling for submissions for its upcoming inquiry on in ..read more

This year the Chancellor made the decision to uprate universal credit by £20 a week and boosted the incomes of millions of families. There is evidence from the likes of the Social Metrics Commission to suggest that this welcome uplift has kept hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, if the uplift comes to an end in April 2021, 700,000 more people are projected to fall into poverty, including 300,000 children. The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Poverty is calling for submissions on the impact of ending this temporary Covid-19 £20 uplift in ..read more
