Unused peak, subfloor found

https://imgur.com/a/DgZaGSZ Hi i just got finished removing a non load bearing wall in my house. My home was built in 1930 I always was curious about this first peak in my house. It’s unused and I was thinking about making it as a 2nd attic/storage area if supported well enough. After part of the ceiling came out I look and saw the joists. But then I see what looks to be subfloor. Why would that be? I looked inside some joists and don’t see any evident of a hole being cut for attic access submitted by /u/t7716 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I live in the NYC area. I was wondering what is the going rate to get mini split units installed? I would need one unit branching out to 3 heads going to 3 different rooms? Any estimates on this? submitted by /u/paulo1389 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Why does it take my toilet so long to flush?

So this toilet worked completely fine for years but about 2-3 months ago I had to replace the flange which turned into a bit more of a project because I had to replace the pipe it was glued into as well. I replaced everything and it looked identical to how it did prior but with new pvc. Now the toilet has to load up with water before it begins to actually drain during a flush I pulled it off again thinking maybe the wax was obstructing the drain (no issue). I snaked the toilet itself (it’s only maybe 2 years old now) and found no obstructions there either. Anyone have any ideas why it would s ..read more

What do you do when companies all suggest different things for a project? (Installing a water softener in this case).

Spouse and I are looking into getting a water softener for our house. We have hard water that leaves blue residue in our sinks/tubs and is likely corroding our pipes, so it’s something we need done (not to mention it dries out our skin and hair, haha). As I learned from this sub, it’s important to get multiple estimates so we called a few people to come out. However they are all suggesting different things, leaving us confused as to what is the priority. Company A says we need a water neutralizer as well because our Ph is high. Quoted us about $3.9k (includes a year of salt and permits as I l ..read more

Blinds, is there a cheap way to go about this?

So I just got a house and I have 7 windows plus a sliding glass door that I want to install blinds. Now I'm planning on doing this myself to save money and I don't exactly have a lot of money to play with. So what routes did you all take to get blinds for cheap? I know I could do curtains but with the layout it would just look ugly. The windows range from 34" all the way up to 54" and I'm trying to stay away from paying like 200 dollars a blind which seems to be everywhere I look. Maybe I'm checking the wrong sites etc. Also if it helps, I plan on doing that all IN frame. Pretty sure that's w ..read more

Dry wall paper, easily replaced?

The dry wall is wet and I easily peeled it off due to mold forming. I ripped it off where it seems to be one layer paper (looks like cardboard) and paint over it and inside seems like a harder board (maybe clay?) Looks wet but feels dry. Do I need to rip off the dry paper also? Or can I patch the removed part only? Also will it be costly? submitted by /u/liiiliiIiIiiliiil [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Do they sell just the handle part? It looks to be only leaking there. Or do I need to replace the entire faucet? https://imgur.com/a/bLEj2h7 submitted by /u/syi916 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is Refinancing Required

Recently bought a house and are making a few changes. The plan is to enclose the carport turning it into an enclosed garage, also to add a privacy fence, screened back room, and solar panels. Eventually adding a 2nd bathroom as well. So if we do this are we required to refinance the house since these are permanent room additions? We would not be taking out a loan or adding to the mortgage. submitted by /u/Nashiki20 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

We just bought a new house in NC. Just realized that one of the return air vents is just open to the attic without any ducting. Seems like a problem to me but not sure how big of a problem it really is. submitted by /u/Jlove7714 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi I'm in southern indiana and I'm insulating a 10x20 shed for a game room/office, i will have a 12k btu ac and 11k btu heater, it is 2x4 construction. Im planning r15 fiberglass and 3mm radiant insulation for the walls. Would this be enough for the ceiling or should I figure out a way to do higher r-value for the ceiling. submitted by /u/Spartan_patrol [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
