“I was looking for a way to improve fit and comfort. You wouldn’t swap into someone else’s shoes in any other sport! Rowing in England and being on the tide we have problems – shoes get wet and boat sheds are not weatherproof, the result being you are putting your feet in size 14 rotten shoes. I’d always been looking for other solutions.”

“It makes so much sense you can’t imagine not having it. There was no push back from the committee or rowers at all, just people asking why this hasn’t been done before!”

“I can say that having shoes that can go in any seat, perhaps customized with shims, that can be hung and dried between practices is one of the best quality-of-life improvements I’ve seen recently in this sport.”

“We had rented a boat for our sculler, after his row he said he really liked the boat, but it just didn’t feel right because he found the shoes to be too tight. He only had 15 mins until his race and was happy to fix it up later. Quick as a flash the boatman pulls the shoes out of the single, whips in another pair, all in the blink of an eye. We were all standing around a bit gobsmacked, and that won me over. The ease of changing shoes in a short period of time to improve the comfort of the rower and the feel of the boat was awesome. ”

“At CRI with all the boats rowed 2-3 times per day by different members, the QuickRelease System gave everyone the opportunity to row their best by having the correct shoe size in any boat at any time. It made a very positive impact on our overall member satisfaction.”

Rowers come in all shapes and sizes. One aspect of this is that the anatomy of our lower limbs varies greatly. Some of us have incredibly long femurs (thigh bones), some have terrible ankle flexibility and some even have one leg longer than the other. This makes for an interesting challenge when trying to get individuals moving in the same way together.

The Shoulder Joint is an undervalued piece of the rowing puzzle. When functioning optimally it goes unnoticed as a seamless link in the chain and the ability to “hang off the handle” is easy. However, if this link in the chain is functioning sub-optimally there is a huge energy cost. BAT Logic’s Meg Hester explores this issue in her Row360 Biomechanics article.
