In our Schroth Method Therapy Residential Programs, parents actively participate and are coached to better help their daughter or son manage their Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. Each family is given: An individual documented assessment consultation for their daughter/son’s scoliosis curvature pattern and posture which includes a review of recently taken x-ray images and a comparison with initial program photos A customized series of Schroth therapeutic scoliosis 3-dimensional exercises is then provided for each patient to perform. Parents are coached to assist their daughter/son with their ..read more

According to the SOSORT 2016 Guidelines, there is now strong evidence emerging which is supporting the use of physiotherapeutic scoliosis specific exercises (PSSE) for adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The Schroth Method is acknowledged by SOSORT as a ‘School’ which is compliant with its PSSE exercise guidelines. The 2016 SOSORT guidelines relate specifically to a review of the current evidence on the effectiveness conservative treatment of idiopathic scoliosis (CTIS) over the past 5 years, particularly with respect to bracing and PSSE. In formulating the latest consensus guidelines, with ..read more

Schroth Exercises Improve Bracing Effectiveness

The major aim of conservative treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is to prevent curve progression. History of the disorder has shown that curvatures of 50° can continue to progress in adulthood. Curvatures of 45° and above are therefore considered at risk of surgery. Rigid bracing is widely used as a treatment for the prevention of curve progression in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (10 to 15 years of age, until skeletal maturity) and can significantly decrease the progression of high-risk curves. However, the treatment failure rate remains high. Dr. H R Weiss, in his case repo ..read more

A Case Report for Adolescent Bracing

Schroth Method scoliosis exercise therapy can play a significant role in improving health related quality of life (QOL) for idiopathic scoliosis patients, both during adolescence and throughout adulthood. However, during the adolescent growth spurt, brace treatment can be considered the primary treatment. Whilst there currently exists a wide offering of braces, which all claim to be ‘state of the art’, only some of them are able to correct and improve curvatures and trunk deformity. The correct choice of brace is therefore critical; a brace that will not deliver the best possible correction ou ..read more

Evidence that the Schroth Method of conservative treatment for scoliosis can alleviate, and eliminate pain, and therefore enhance quality of life despite the presence of adult scoliosis, is well documented in a research article published in 2012 – The Schroth Method of Treatment for a Patient Diagnosed with Scoliosis: A Case Report. The 62 female patient noticed the uneveness in her hips and shoulders when she was at high school, but because there were no specific symptoms, she did not seek treatment. At the age of 56 she was formally diagnosed with scoliosis. X-rays revealed a 20° right ..read more

The results of a study (March 2016) undertaken at a hospital in South Korea reported Schroth exercise therapy as being significantly effective as a conservative form of treatment for idiopathic scoliosis. The study was conducted with 5 female patients over a 12 week period which involved 3 x 60 minute Schroth exercise therapy sessions per week. The patients participating in the study each had idiopathic scoliosis with a thoracic curve of 40° and were at risk of progression, and possibly surgery. Excluded from the study were patients whose scoliosis: was of a neurological diagnosis; had recentl ..read more

Schroth Method – Preventing Progression
Scoliosis Therapy Centre Australia

The Schroth Method offers conservative management of idiopathic scoliosis in the form of scoliosis specific physical exercises – the main goal being the prevention of curve progression. Scoliosis specific physical exercises counter the ‘vicious cycle‘ by restraining deforming forces and establishing a ‘virtuous cycle’, not only during corrective exercises but also in activities of daily living. Scoliosis specific physical exercises have been underestimated as a form of conservative management of idiopathic scoliosis. The reasons for this relate to little evidence published in medical journals ..read more
