Correction: language deprived Saw a post about language deprived parents and how this affects parenting. Creating this post so we can discuss how it's like when a CODA, deaf, and partner with no exposure to the deaf culture live in one home. For more info, the partner was surrounded by adults who value independence, learning, constant growth, and career progression. What conflicts do you experience and how do you go about them? How does the dynamic change when there are grandchildren? How do you protect boundaries of each individuals when compromise may not be possible from the language depri ..read more

My Dad is 62. He’s not been deaf his whole life but had a traumatic brain injury in 2007 and lost all hearing in his left ear. Then in 2016 he started losing his hearing in his right after being diagnosed with a benign brain tumour, he still has some hearing but sometimes really struggles with processing what he’s heard due to his brain injury. Around 1-2 years before this (2014/15), in his job working in car manufacturing he suffered a spinal injury causing issues with movement and strength in his right arm. He still worked up until last year when he took early retirement due to finding a bl ..read more

I'm HoH and involved in a discussion about captioning accessibility and have a quick question: I know that BlueJeans video-conferencing app is being shut down, but I’m still hoping to find out whether anyone knows whether all meetings allowed captioning, or whether the administrator had to specifically enable it. Thanks! submitted by /u/US-TW-CN [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Computer not recognizing my hearing aids as sound output

Hi all, I have always been able to select my Phonak hearing aids as a sound output on my laptop. Until about a week ago. It shows they're connected via bluetooth, but they don't show up as an option for sound output anymore. I've tried everything I can think of and everything I could find on the internet. Nothing has worked. My last desperate option will be to try wiping my computer. I'd really not like to do that since I don't even know if it will work. Has anyone encountered this problem and been able to fix it? submitted by /u/LollieGee [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I got new hearing aids, being finally able to have hearing aids that I can use in my left ear. However, besides hating how stereo/radios sound terrible now (versus music played through my Bluetooth hearing aids) I am PLAGUED by the awful sound of English!!! I HATE the “S”/“Ch”/“Puh” and the popping sound from the letter P. How do I stop it!! It’s driving me crazy!! It sounds terribly from the Bluetooth and across the air. “Releases.” “Search.” What god awful words!! submitted by /u/tatsumizus [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello! I’m working with a high school student who is interested in becoming an EMT. I work with him on language and communication. I could just google some vocab and teach it but I want to get a more real perspective from all of you because you’ve actually experienced it. :) Do you have any suggestions re: what to work on? I’m most curious about… the types of communication you manage throughout the job… receiving emergency info (via radio or something else?), communicating with hearing people in an emergency situation, any writing you have to regularly do, and kinds of vocab that would be nic ..read more

Just before I start, i'm really really sorry if this is considered a rude questions. I wasn't really sure how to phrase this or if it's rude to just like...throw myself into this with how little I know comparatively but here it goes. I'm hearing, i've been learning BSL for a couple of months now, really gotten into it, i'm learning because it's always something i've been fascinated by, so finally started! I work in a retail environment and i've picked up enough signs now that I could use it whilst i'm working to have a small conversation with anyone who is Deaf or HoH. My question is, would i ..read more

Hi, so i work in a kitchen and we have 4 deafs cooks and a hard of earing one, i was wondering what would you like your coworker to do to make your life easier in this situation ? i'm learning the ÖGS Fingeralphabet at home (i'm in austria) but i'm just wondering if there's any things else i could do to make them feel more at ease, the job is quite boring in itself and the only pro of it is the social aspect, and they cannot enjoy this part of the job as much as we do due to their disability and it makes me feel sad. submitted by /u/YouWantAPleceOfMeBoy [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
