When will 2020 be over? Thankfully in just a matter of days. This year took the game from us in many places. Colleges barely played. There was barely any high school baseball here. There was no minor league baseball. Major League baseball was just a portion of the season. It has been an insane world in 2020. Now throw in that the year took some of the greatest to ever play the game with the most recent being Phil Niekro. But Niekro is just one of many that 2020 took from us, including some of the greatest pitchers of all-time. Niekro won 318 games over his 24 years in the big leagues. Most of ..read more

There is no denying my hatred of the Philadelphia Phillies. After all, I am a die-hard Atlanta Braves fan. But as I was working on my thesis today, which is about baseball’s impact on the war effort during WWII, I couldn’t help but notice something as I was going through some documents. But the 1943 Phillies did less during WWII. I am not going to go into this in too much depth, but I think these two documents, which came from the Baseball Hall of Fame, are quite telling of the team. Now granted this was in 1943 and the team has changed hands over time, but there are several instances where th ..read more

What a change a week can make. In just a short time we have gone from anticipation of Opening Day, a full college baseball schedule, and the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers upcoming to nothing. Everything got shut down over COVID-19 or Coronavirus. College baseball has been canceled, which is sad for all of those students out there competing. Will the NCAA allow each player another year of eligibility? That remains to be seen. So what do we do with no sports for awhile. We wait. Fortunately MLB has not canceled the season, just postponed it. Baseball will return, in time. I know we were look ..read more

For our first 2020 WBC Qualifier, we will look at the Brazil roster. This is a team that could do some damage in the qualifier and has a solid chance to advance. Brazil played in the 2013 edition of the World Baseball Classic finishing 14th. They qualified through the 2013 Qualifier going 3-0 before dropping each game in the 2013 WBC. After failing to qualify in 2017, they are back again trying to qualify for their second time in the big tournament. The team is lead by Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, who again returns to manage the team. He is joined by some other former Major League talent in Ste ..read more
