A rich/poor couple have a trust. The rich person of couple gets some dementia, but has 250k cash in account (and millions in a trust for heirs). Other poor spouse arranges trip to storied-consultant with new research results (in Los Angeles, of course); it’s worth spending the 250k, says poor side of couple. Net result? Nice trip to Los Angeles, posher districts (not the poor streets, with drugged up addicts everywhere). Fancy hotels. The old life… for the last time, as it were. Lots of 40k jewelry…purchases. And a 50k consult fee for the dr (and aid, with “equivalent credentials” to a certif ..read more

Advice from a primary care giver turned nursing home worker…

There are plenty of things that we wish we could tell you, those of us who work in the trenches of nursing homes, these are just a few, please understand that this message comes from a place of wanting to be very upfront and unfiltered. I lost my own loved one with dementia, I was a primary caregiver to my grandfather . I also work in a memory care facility. 1. We don’t know everything. Dementia changes and how it is cared for has changed and is changing. There are new screenings out for it, but not all of us can read up on it, or frankly are given the time to do so. I have to fight with my b ..read more

Hi, my dad's currently on a diuretic to help with fluid on his lung. Tonight at least twice he peed on the hall floor by the door and on kitchen floor. I feel lost on what to do. I'm sole carer. I can't stay up all night every night. ? I am so tired I need sleep. I've left the kitchen light on so at least he may hopefully use the sink at least. I've also put a bucket by the front door. submitted by /u/Domino3286 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Sudden dislike of cats?

So my dad is 95 and diagnosed with vascular dementia. He’s always been fond of cats, and liked our previous cat fine. Got on with him, petted him and interacted with him occasionally. Since that older cat left, we got two new kittens, and my dad can’t stand them??? Anytime one brushes up against him or runs past him, he’ll claim it bit or scratched him. I’ve seen for myself that he’s making this up. The funny thing is, the kittens seem to be fond of him and run into his room at every opportunity. The kittens are around 6months old, and honestly don’t bother him at all. He also regularly asks ..read more

My sister and I took Dad to London three weeks ago. It helped!

A lot. He's been so absolutely laser focused on going somewhere and doing something and seeing people. Well, he lived in London for a few years twenty years ago and absolutely loved it, so we wanted to take him at least one more time while he was still able to appreciate it. He had a blast and has been so much calmer the last few weeks. For the moment it seems to have satisfied him that he's been somewhere fun and had a lot of fun very recently. He was even complaining today about how expensive it was, which is not something I think he'd have noticed it cared about before the trip. I don't th ..read more

I’m just overwhelmed. We did what he wanted despite dishonesty and the absolute hell he put us through. He stayed in his home. Until the end. Two nights in hospital before he was gone. No assisted living, no nursing home. Just me caring for my grandfather. In all ways. He was incontinent, and relied on me for damn near everything. My husband helped but mostly with CONVINCING Grampy that my intentions were good and he should listen to me. It helped immensely but frustrated me. Why couldn’t he just trust NE that way? Purely because I’m female. No other reason. It was forced upon me and yet I ha ..read more

Mom with Parkinson’s dementia finally entered home hospice this weekend. What a breath of relief - I have a whole team supporting me and our paid CNAs to the end now. The CNAs live with mom. I’d like to increase their pay since she’s in hospice state and harder to care for. How much of a premium should I give them? submitted by /u/oompaloompa85 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Group home has trouble with my mother being combative, nit sure what else to do with her

My mother is 78 and is in a group home setting. Her dementia is pretty rapid and she has greatly declined over the last 3 years to where she cannot be left alone so I had to sell her place and put her in a group home setting. A memory care facility is too expensive and she will quickly run out of money and have to go right back to a group home facility as medicaid doesnt cover memory care, so that won't work. I dont know what to do because she seems to be getting combative with the workers when they try to clean her or when her brother and sister visit her th3y tell me how she is screaming an ..read more

Currently manic

So I had to get POA for my dad with dementia a few years back after he ended up in inpatient care after a psychotic episode. It's taken three years of all his kids making emergency flights to keep him out of the hospital at random times. He's been afraid of the world basically, doing nothing but watching TV and unable to understand how anything works like bills or scheduling, buying and prepping food, etc. Now his doc calls saying he's very manic and is going to enter psychosis if he doesn't calm down (up pill dosage and cut caffeine), he did finally agree to that. The pharmacy just gave him ..read more
