The dementia Truman Show

This is a half-rant/half-concern my mom seems to be suffering from dementia because it appears she has the most terrible care based on our conversations when she feels like talking to me. She is quite stubborn, always has been. The problem is what these doctors are saying "its old age disease, take a rest, ignore them" but she is calling me and my brothers several times throughout the day. Her dementia causes severe hallucinations I have a lead on a doc and she wont see them. My brothers installed cameras in the house and watch her like the Truman show. What makes me angry is that she is gett ..read more

Desperately seeking advice. My mom suffers from apparent dementia. Allen Cognitive level of 4.8 following a fall, refuses to have MRI. She and my dad have been married for over 40 years. Their marriage always appeared happy. However, she has begun "cycles" of lashing out at him, does not want to be near him, says she wants to be far away from him. At times she accuses him of infidelity. She has said several times she wants a divorce. My mom has been telling my dad she wants to go live in an assisted living/nursing home: something she NEVER wanted! I'm thinking that perhaps she simply needs so ..read more

Yesterday she was adult-ish and I took her to the hospital. Today she’s like a child.

I can’t help but feel like I have harmed her. I see more decline every hour that she is there. But home wasn’t working, the aggression and depression and paranoia were destroying both of us, and it seemed like the best of the bad options. I have a day to look at placements. They want to place her ASAP. And once she’s placed, I need to see someone for me because the guilt is overwhelming. I was collapsing taking care of her at home. Now I feel even worse. I can’t change what I did. I wish I knew how to take better care of her. I wish, I wish, I wish. submitted by /u/2211108646 [visit reddit ..read more

We can't tie them up

So what do we do? Don't get up. Don't get up. Don't get up x 5000. Mom's full assist... but also full stubborn and apparently perfectly fine if she wants to stand up. She just doesn't do well after that. Get up mom, she refuses to get up on her own. Sit down, mom, refuses to sit. Walk, mom, she tries to sit. Blink, she's up. Go to kitchen, she's up. Yawn, she's up. 5 seconds later she's on the floor. Tore her arm pretty good yesterday falling. It's a miracle she hasn't broken anything bigger than her wrist, which was last year. She's gone. She doesn't understand. She doesn't make sense. But s ..read more

My MIL has recently been waking up me and my wife at all hours to tell us about swarms of "near microscopic" in her room. They are only present when the lights are off. We have tried not to argue, but it's getting to be problematic. No change in medication. No UTI. We have brought this up to her neurogist and waiting for a response. How do we deal with this. She sleeps all day and stays up all night. Me and my wife average 4-5 hours a sleep a day on a good day and her waking us up randomly at 3,4, 5a is taking its toll physically on us and we don't have the bandwidth to go check her room ever ..read more

Clearing Out Loved one’s clothes

My husband is somewhere in the middle stages of dementia. He’s always been a borderline hoarder, never wanting to get rid of anything. He has a large amount of clothes and shoes he hasn’t wanted to wear in a long time. Only wants to wear the same few items. And they’re in a different style than what he historically wore. I’d like to pare down the amount of clothes he has so at least there’s room in his closet. I can manage to bag them up now without him registering it. ( though I work from home and he’s here with me all day). But I feel funny about doing so. Guess I’m kind of looking for an o ..read more

I finally signed up for caregiver support groups

I got a list of caregiver virtual groups and local groups from the Alzheimer's Organization and they're all during the day, absolutely none after 5 o'clock! What's up with that?? There is one virtual group they sent me info about but it's bilingual and unfortunately, my Spanish isn't good enough. Though I don't work, (trying to get approved for disability), I'm slammed with appointments to view assisted living and memory care homes for my mom, helping her with her dr appointments, making phone calls, my dr appointments, plus I have my own caregiver who comes three days a week for 4 hours (mor ..read more

I’ve posted in here before about my Dad’s situation and you all have been such a supportive community. About 2 weeks ago now he went to the ER because he had a high fever and was very sick with pneumonia. They didn’t think he’d make it through the night. He surprisingly did but the decision was made to work with hospice. Everyone here was right. Hospice is one of the few services that the US healthcare system almost does right. They were so kind and comforting. He passed within 2 days of going to the ER. If you’re here, I don’t have to tell you how horrible this disease is. He had FTD and hon ..read more

My mom has always been a sort of paranoid/ unorganized forgetful person but as the years have gone by she seems to be declining… she has been super paranoid and like un trusting thinking people are following her and taking her money. She remembers my number by heart and like memories and stuff we did but then like she’ll ask the same questions over again. But she remembers stuff when I was little too. She’s very active and runs daily and hasn’t drank or smoke in years. She lost a lot of weight though bc she wasn’t eating well and didn’t have a lot of money and her health is fine i guess, I th ..read more

What to talk about?

My grandmother has dimentia and is now in a memory care facility near my home. I'm visiting twice a week but don't know what to talk to her about. She has apashia and when she responds it's 1-2 words. We don't have alot of shared history, I only saw her a few times a year as a kid and it was occasional phone calls as an a adult. Once we get past the basic pleasantries, I don't know what to say. We usually go for a walk around the facility, take a seat in one of the day rooms and then.....nothing. she doesn't know who I am and even if she did, my life is boring lol. I've brought out pictures f ..read more
