What happens with the Reds if Bally Sports Ohio folds?

The sports broadcasting rights bubble was eventually going to burst. We first saw the signs when Time Warner paid upwards of $200,000,000 a year for the rights to broadcast Los Angeles Dodgers games and then in short order half of LA couldn’t watch the games because Time Warner wanted too much money from some of the “cable” companies in the area and they refused to pay up to carry them. IT wasn’t much longer until the same thing began to play out nationwide with Dish Network, and then streaming platforms like Hulu, YouTube TV, and others. There may be a major issue now for the Cincinnati Reds ..read more

Baseball Is Life: The Glow From the Inside

It looked, as I crossed the river from Kentucky into Ohio, as if the outside lights of Paul Brown Stadium* were strobing. As the car whipped past post after post of the I75 bridge, the stadium sent bright flashes across the state line and back into the city. This was the Night of the Miracle of the Five Offensive Linemen, and at 1 AM on Monday, the city slept cradling the knowledge that not only did we need to continue to process the knowledge that we had somehow produced the AFC champions, we were now in a position to do so again, and without several decades in between. “This cannot last,” we ..read more

Will the new “balanced schedule” help the Cincinnati Reds?
Redleg Nation

There are a few different things that are going to be happening in 2023. The biggest one appears to be the new shift rules that will be in place, but larger bases are coming, pickoff attempt limits are coming, a pitch clock is coming, and something less noticeable too – a “balanced” schedule. While it’s being called a balanced schedule, it’s not as if every team plays the same exact schedule. But every team will not play fewer games against their divisional opponents and they will also play at least one series against every team in baseball. Mike Petriello of MLB.com made an attempt to dig int ..read more

Former Cincinnati Reds 3B Scott Rolen elected to the Hall of Fame

It seems that the Hall of Fame may have tipped their hand earlier today as to the fact that Scott Rolen was going to be getting into the club. But it became official just after 6PM this evening when it was officially announced. The third baseman received votes from 297 writers, giving him 76.3% of the votes (you must receive at least 75% to be elected). Scott Rolen isn’t known for his time in Cincinnati, where he spent three-and-a-half seasons at the end of his career. But Rolen was a 2-time All-Star for the Reds, getting the nod in both 2010 and 2011. In his parts of four seasons with Cincinn ..read more

Cincinnati Reds roster is “pretty much set”, says Nick Krall

The Cincinnati Reds aren’t likely to add any big leaguers to their roster before the 2023 season according to general manager Nick Krall. Earlier today at the kick off for the Reds Caravan, Krall told the audience, as reported by Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer, that the roster is “pretty much set”. Further noting that there could still be some minor league deals that could bring in guys to camp. Earlier today the team did just that, re-signing reliever Derek Law to a minor league deal and giving him an invitation to spring training. Coming off of one of the worst seasons in franc ..read more

Derek Law re-signs with the Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds have signed right-handed pitcher Derek Law. The 32-year-old is coming back to the Reds on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. In the 2022 season Derek Law saw action in 17 games in the Major Leagues with the Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds. He’s seen action in every big league season since 2016 except for the 2020 season. Law’s season began with the Tigers in April in Triple-A. He posted a 3.23 ERA with Toledo in 33 games, and allowed a run in 2.0 innings with Detroit after the All-Star break before he was then designated for assignment. After clearing ..read more

Reds Longest Homers of 2022 #1: Jonathan India

We are finally to the top spot on the list. This week we’re taking a look at the longest home run hit by a Cincinnati Reds player during the 2022 season. Over the last decade or so we’ve been given the ability to at least *sort of* be able to compare the distances on home runs thanks to ball tracking technologies, making lists like this a lot more fun to look at because there’s not nearly as much guesswork on it as there used to be. The longest homer of the year came on September 4th by Jonathan India. The home run traveled an estimated 447 feet in Cincinnati against Colorado Rockies reliever ..read more

Baseball Is Life: The Value and Purpose of Shutting Up
Redleg Nation
by Mary Beth Ellis

If this month’s first matchup between the Bengals and the Bills was the night the whole city could not sleep, then the past seven days have been the week the whole world count not shut up. It is a frustration that the two people on the planet who should stop talking the most– Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Phil, Duke of Going Elsewhere– have quick access to microphones attached to very large sound systems. I realize that I’m typing this as a person who has made an entire career out of oversharing, sometimes in extremely uncomfortable ways, but I also don’t take an entire monarchy or a 154 year old ..read more
