Mild conditions met competitors at Holme Pierrepont Country Park on Saturday, 20 April for British Rowing’s first Championship event of the year – Junior Inter-Regional Regatta. Thirteen regions battled it out for medals, with Team Scotland making their debut appearance at the competition. Co-Team Manager for Scotland Ronan Welch said: “It’s really exciting to be along for the first ever time. The parents have loved it, the coaches have loved it and most importantly, the juniors have absolutely loved it. The racing came thick and fast, with crews adding eight medals to the gold won by Olivia Bates in the lightweight women’s single on Saturday. The golds came in the Men’s pair, Lightweight Women’s double, Women’s four and Men’s eight. It was a one, two in the Women’s four (W4-) with the GBR1 crew of Helen Glover, Esme Booth, Sam Redgrave and Rebecca Shorten taking gold and the GBR2 crew of Heidi Long, Rowan McKellar, Holly Dunford and Emily Ford taking the silver. Olivia (Liv) Bates put Great Britain on the World Rowing Cup I medal table with her first senior gold in the Lightweight women’s single sculls (LW1x) on day two in Varese. “It feels great!” Liv said, speaking to the media after the race, “This is my first international gold medal so it’s nice to start the season strong. The three GB women’s four (W4-) boats were drawn in the same heat. Not only was it all to play for with just the top two going directly to the final, but the GBR2 and GBR3 crews raced again just two hours later, where they convincingly won their Women’s eight (W8+) heat, coxed by Henry Fieldman.
