Defenseman Cam Kungle committed to Merrimack out of the transfer portal on Friday. The Warriors were looking to add a big, strong defenseman who can win battles down low and near the crease. Kungle is 6-foot-2 and averaged almost 18 minutes per game as a freshman for Lake Superior State last season. In 37 games for the Lakers, Kungle had nine points (1g-8a). He was a +1 and had 33 PIMs. Kungle was a two-year captain for Cranbrook in the BCHL. In 2022-23, he had 32 points (10g-22a) in 50 games. Photo: Chicago Steel Merrimack bolstered its forward group on Thursday with a commitment from Michael Emerson out of the transfer portal. Emerson, 20, appeared in six games during the first half of last season at North Dakota but opted to return to the USHL and the Chicago Steel. Over the last two seasons in Chicago, Emerson had 84 points (39g-45a) in 87 games. The New York native was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes last June. Merrimack assistant basketball coach Phil Gaetano has left the program and joined the program at Saint Louis as an assistant coach. He’ll work for Josh Schertz, who was just hired as the new head coach this offseason; he was previously at Indiana State. Merrimack received a commitment from Niagara center Jack Richard from the transfer portal. Richard had 10 goals and 11 assists for the Purple Eagles as a freshman this past season. Richard is 6-foot-4, and he’s from Stoney Creek, Ont. According to my records, he’ll be the tallest Merrimack forward since Hampus Gustafsson graduated in 2017. Before Niagara, Richard was the captain of the Burlington Cougars (OJHL) in 2022-23. In 52 games, he scored 53 goals and added 35 assists for 88 points. Goaltender Ryan Keyes commits to Merrimack

Keyes, 20, is an Alaska native who has been playing for the South Shore Kings in the NCDC this season. In 41 games, he has a 2.06 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. Goaltender Nils Wallstrom commits to Merrimack out of the transfer portal

Merrimack has landed AIC goalie Nils Wallstrom out of the transfer portal. Wallstrom announced his commitment on Thursday. Wallstrom was a freshman at AIC this past season and led the Yellow Jackets to the Atlantic Hockey championship game. In 33 games, Wallstrom posted a 2.27 GAA and a .920 save percentage.  Wallstrom will be one of the replacements for Hugo Ollas (who signed with the New York Rangers) and Zachary Borgiel (who entered the transfer portal).
