New Subtitle for PIVOTAL

As we got one step closer to the publication of my seventh book, we decided at the last minute that we needed a new subtitle. The old one, “Mastering Depth in an Era of Perpetual Pivoting,” was confusing and too hard to say. Try saying “perpetual pivoting” ten times without spitting on someone! Over the past several months, I have heard the same message from many clients: How can we increase predictability when everything seems so unpredictable? My response has been, “You can’t. But you can increase stability.” And that led to the new subtitle: Creating Stability in an Uncertain World.” We are ..read more

AI Generation of Audio and Video

I’m playing around with Pictory, an AI software that generates voices from text, and then selects videos that match the text. The first version of the video was generated with no edits. I used the defaults for everything. It literally took less than one minute to create it. I uploaded a text summary of my PIVOTAL book and this is what it generated without any intervention. The only decision I made was to choose the voice. I chose a British accent because I lived in London and am an Anglophile. Not bad for zero effort. Next, I spent about 30 minutes cleaning it up a bit. I selected a different ..read more

AI Inbreeding
Innovation Insights | Stephen Shapiro Blog

AI is creating massive amounts of content quickly. And a lot of this ends up getting posted on the internet. This got me thinking about the future of Large Language Models (LLMs). At some point, a large percentage of content on the internet will be AI-generated. And if the LLMs continue to be trained using that content, a form of inbreeding will occur. As the models get trained on the content they already spit out, any newly generated content would be a regurgitated version of that old information. The quality, instead of improving, will decline rapidly. To make matters even worse, AI hallucin ..read more

A Full Virtual Studio that Packs in a Briefcase

I recently delivered a speech for a client who held their retreat in a remote location several hours away from the nearest airport. Another client wanted me to speak at their innovation conference the following morning, but my travel schedule wouldn’t have allowed me to arrive at the second event on time. Fortunately, they were open to me delivering this two-hour-long interactive workshop virtually. When I am at home, I conduct these presentations in my dedicated studio. However, I was on the road and still wanted to have the same capabilities. Welcome to my travel virtual studio. Whether at ..read more

Tip 8: There’s No Such Thing as a Know-It-All

Summary of Tip 8 (of 40) from Best Practices Are Stupid. There’s No Such Thing as a Know-It-All The late great Will Rogers once said, “There is nothing so stupid as an educated man if you get him off the thing that he was educated in.” No one person can know everything. And no organization can solve every problem. This is why open innovation is so powerful. In this tip, we explore a model to determine which opportunities are the right ones for external collaboration – and which should be solved internally. Tip #9: What Did Edison Get Wrong About Innovation? That tip goes deeper into the power ..read more

My Best $1 Travel Must Have Item
Innovation Insights | Stephen Shapiro Blog

What is your most used travel item that costs less than $5? When I ask people this question, I hear ideas ranging from ear plugs and eye shades to nail files and a travel-sized screwdriver kit. Mine is a $1 travel-sized spray bottle. That might not sound very exciting, but it serves many purposes. The most obvious use is to wet my hair and restyle it when needed. This is great after a long flight when my hair gets messed up from wearing noise-cancellation headphones. A more advanced application is that instead of using the steam from the hotel iron (which often spits out white calcium deposits ..read more
