Homemade Herbal Bitters
New Leaf Naturopathic Health

I love bitters! It has been a lifelong joy in celebrating them not only as plant-medicine but also for fun. Bitters are one of the key components in many of my herbal tonics. It’s true that when people first try herbal medicine they think that they are all bitter, however, some are absolutely more bitter than others. You can have warming bitters, cooling bitters and aromatic bitters. Their medicinal actions can be relaxing, stimulating and tonifying. Their uses are abundant. So what’s so good about Bitters? Simply put a bitter is “a substance that promotes appetite, digestion and absorption by ..read more

RU Ok? A Spring update from the clinic

10 Sept 2020: Today is RU OK Day. If I’ve learnt anything from 2020 so far, it’s that we need more of this type of thing – more checking in, more asking real questions, and listening to the answers – even if we don’t always have the solution. Out of the many things I love about the work I do, the thing that stays with me the most is being in the privileged position of hearing my clients’ stories of their inner fears, their grief, their trauma and the transformation that often follows. Holding that space for you is the best part of my job. You all teach me so much about the world and ..read more

Naturopathic Update on Coronavirus
New Leaf Naturopathic Health
by Hannah Boyd

It is important to understand the implications for your health and wellbeing with the recent outbreak of Coronavirus. There is a lot of misinformation about how it is spread and what it is. I suggest relying on sources like the Dept of Health and the World Health Organisation for updated information on how it is spreading and impacting your community. Transmission of Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Coronavirus is spread via direct contact. Anyone who has recently returned from China or has been close to infected areas should monitor themselves for symptoms of respiratory ailments for 14 days ..read more

A bit of bitter

Let’s talk about BITTER FOOD. Do you know why bitter foods are good for you? This week saw the return of our Vege Box after a long summer break. It means we’ll be getting amazing fresh and tasty seasonal veg on our doorstep every fortnight. I love my vege box guys, as many of you know (shout out to Shane & Mindy) and I miss them terribly over the summer when they take a well-deserved break. What happens when they aren’t around is I have to source my veg from places I usually won’t – I get them from supermarkets as it’s convenient (life needs to be easy, even on holidays). Apart f ..read more

What is intuitive eating?
New Leaf Naturopathic Health
by Hannah Boyd

Teaching our clients about intuitive eating is always at the top of our clinical to-do list at New Leaf. Naturopath Chloe Wilkinson explains what it is and why we all need to be doing it. Understanding and knowing your body is a powerful tool. Too often these days we don’t listen to what our body wants, or what our body needs. Intuitive eating is not a new concept, but a concept that I find myself regularly talking to my clients about. The principle of intuitive eating is to give your body what it needs and wants, rather than restricting your intake of certain foods. At New Leaf we ..read more

The Gut-Brain Axis
New Leaf Naturopathic Health

Naturopath & sports nutritionist Sarah Fehlberg discusses how your brain and your gut are talking to each other. There is truth in the sayings such as “Oh I feel sick to my stomach with worry” and “I have butterflies in my stomach”. The science is now very clear – our worries alter our gut function and, our gut function changes our mood. If you’re a client of mine, you may have heard me talk to you about the difference between The Sympathetic nervous vs Parasympathetic nervous system. The Sympathetic nervous system This is our “fight or flight” – this is where hor ..read more
