The language of cricket: Eoin Morgan

In what I hope is the first of a series of interviews with cricket commentators and pundits, The Cricket Blog spoke to Eoin Morgan about the language of the game. Following a stellar career which he drew to a close in the summer of 2022, former England captain Morgan moved into the commentary box ahead of England’s triumphant World T20 campaign in Australia. It would’ve been remiss not to touch upon that success, one he played such an instrumental role in shaping, as well as discussing the language he used in the changing room and the commentary box. Eoin Morgan led England to World Cup glory ..read more

Ishant Sharma believes the World T20 is India’s to win

Legendary Indian seam bowler, Ishant Sharma, firmly believes that India are primed to scoop their international silverware for more than 10 years at the current World T20, being played in Australia. India last won the World T20 in 2007, a victory that sparked a passion for the format within the country, leading the formation of the world-leading T20 franchise league, the Indian Premier League (IPL). The time has come for India to bring the trophy home once again… To be honest, I think we’ve been unlucky most of the time,” Sharma told BetWay when asked about the tournament. “If you look at the ..read more

Where does Joe Root sit in the pantheon of greats?

Joe Root passed 10,000 Test runs with a flick off his pads. In doing so, he climbed cricket’s Everest, which was first scaled by Alan Border, to become its 14th conqueror. He also brought up Test century number 26 and nudged England to within touching distance of their first Test victory in 10 months. There were many moments colliding at once. As the dust settles, however, just how good is Joe Root? He’s scored enough runs to now be considered in a historical context. Joe Root became the 14th man to score 10,000 Test runs Root is a bonafide member of modern cricket’s Big Four: Steve Smith, V ..read more

Video – Who is the greatest T20 player of all time?
The Cricket Blog

T20 revolutionised cricket when it arrived in 2003. Attacking batting, outrageous fielding, the rise of the mystery spinner; the game hasn’t been the same since. Whilst the format is, arguably, still in its infancy, 19 years is sufficient time to take stock and ask, who is the greatest T20 player of all time? In any conversation about the greatest T20 player of all time, Chris Gayle will feature prominently It’s an interesting question, and who better to answer it than some of those who have been at the epicentre of the revolution? Ahead of IPL15, Betway sat down with Kevin Pietersen, commen ..read more

Joe Root’s England captaincy is surely over

Some Daffodils sprung up outside my kitchen window recently. Encouraged by unseasonably warm weather in March, they flowered. Ah, spring is upon us. Feel the sun warm the back of your neck. They’ve since withered. They cling on, their shrivelled petals omitting a dulled, apologetic shade of yellow. Their crispy demeanour reminded me of Joe Root’s England captaincy. The daffodils pointed in a direction we were not yet ready to turn. They tricked us when the going was unexpectedly easy, but once the temperature turned, they disappeared as quickly as they appeared. Root’s time as captain of Engla ..read more

Test cricket’s toughest test

As spectators filtered in to a damp and gloomy SCG on Wednesday morning, readying themselves for Day 1 of yet another Ashes dead rubber in Australia, Mushfiqur Rahim – the diminutive veteran of the Bangladeshi national team – had just hit the winning runs in a landmark Test cricket victory in New Zealand. The stark contrast between the two fixtures was poetic; a perfect symbol of an international cricket system entirely out of kilter. On the one side, Test cricket’s forgotten team had just beaten the reigning world champions in their own backyard. This was Bangladesh’s first win in any format ..read more

T20 World Cup team of the tournament
The Cricket Blog

The dust had barely settled on the format’s showpiece international event before more of it was being played. Pakistan Vs. Bangladesh and India Vs. New Zealand commenced barely a week later. West Indies and Sri Lanka went straight into a Test series. With a moment to look back, however, we ick our team of the tournament from the T20 World Cup. Shaheen Afridi was a must-watch performer at the T20 World Cup So, who to pick? I was flicking through news articles and came across Kevin Pietersen’s team of the tournament. The former England batsman and former World T20 champion isn’t shy of an opin ..read more

England must endure Ashes drubbing – then rebuild

England last won a Test in Australia in January 2011. It capped off a glorious tour, sealing the series 3-1 in Sydney amid scenes of travelling euphoria. It was a great England side which won its three Tests by an innings. Since then, nine defeats in 10 Tests. A victory Down Under seems as far away now as it has ever been. Jonny Bairstow (L) and Jos Buttler have repeatedly failed in Test cricket yet keep on getting games. It’s time to move on. Australia, for all their lack of recent Test cricket, comfortably have the tools to defeat a bedraggled England side. England’s fast bowlers, Joffra A ..read more
